The Future of Construction: Why Data is the Key to Efficiency and Change

I am really fortunate to be asked to chair a series of panel debates next week in London ably arranged by Michael Barber at AMODAL, focused on data in the construction industry, which for me presents a pivotal moment for professionals across the sector. As we gather to discuss and debate information management, it’s clear that getting this right is not just about efficiency—it’s about shaping the future of the construction industry itself.

We live in an age where data has become the lifeblood of industries. In construction, where projects are complex, multifaceted, and high-risk, the ability to manage information effectively is the foundation for success. The importance of this cannot be overstated. Data is not just an output; it is the enabler of better decision-making, streamlined processes, and, crucially, change. As the sector strives for both greater efficiency and sustainability, getting information management right will be central to achieving these goals.

Information Management: The Key to Transforming Construction

The first panel discussion, "Why Information Management is Essential," will emphasize why information management must be integrated from the very early stages of any project. In construction, inefficiency and mismanagement of information can lead to enormous waste—of time, money, and resources. The panel will explore why developing clear strategies for managing information from the outset is crucial in reducing these inefficiencies. The Building Safety Act has added another layer of urgency, making compliance and information accuracy critical for risk management.

Moreover, the concept of the “Golden Thread” will be highlighted—ensuring that all key information is captured and easily accessible across the lifecycle of a project, not only to enhance safety but also to support future maintenance and operations. With every delay, miscommunication, or lost piece of information, opportunities are missed. The panel will raise vital questions about how we can ensure that data management strategies are not just implemented, but embedded into the DNA of every construction project.

Constructing the Truth: Aligning Information with Long-Term Needs

The next session, "Constructing the Truth," delves into the need to capture the right information at the right time. The sheer volume of data generated throughout the lifecycle of a construction project can be overwhelming, and this session will dissect how we can avoid drowning in unnecessary details. What is captured must align with the long-term operational needs of the asset. This is a critical distinction—what might be important during the construction phase may not always be as relevant when maintaining a building over its lifecycle.

The panel will discuss how clients and project teams can work together to ensure that only the most relevant and necessary information is captured. What’s more, we’ll explore the role of technology in facilitating this process, from the tools used to the standards adhered to, ensuring that the information captured is both usable and protected.

Laying the Foundations for Future Success

In the final session, "Information Management Foundations," the focus will shift to what it takes to lay the groundwork for effective information management. We’ll dive into the people, processes, and technologies that need to be in place to ensure that data is not only captured but used to its full potential. Building a culture of collaboration is key here. Without the buy-in from all stakeholders, from project managers to on-site workers, even the most advanced systems will fail to deliver their potential.

A recurring theme in the discussion will be overcoming the challenges of technology adoption and process change. Construction, like many other industries, often relies on traditional methods such as spreadsheets, which, while familiar, can be a bottleneck in today’s data-driven world. This panel will explore how to move beyond these legacy tools and ensure that data quality and integrity are maintained at every step of the way.

Why This Event Matters

The construction industry is facing immense pressure to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and adapt to new regulatory demands—all while delivering projects that meet the evolving needs of clients and society. Data management is not just a technical requirement; it is the cornerstone of a more efficient, sustainable, and resilient construction industry. Getting this right can unlock new levels of efficiency, improve safety, and drive meaningful change.

This event is more than just a discussion—it’s a critical opportunity to rethink how we approach information in construction. The conversations we will have next week will set the stage for the next phase of transformation in our industry. Join us as we explore how we can harness the power of data to drive both efficiency and lasting change in construction.

Very much looking forward to this event
