The future is Collaborative...
In a race for survival, Neanderthals would probably give us a run for our money.?
Losing scarce resources could put their survival in question, so they always had the need to guard them. However, they learnt to handle it well by distributing roles – hunters, foragers, caregivers, scouts, based on what each person did best.
Unfortunately, even in a world of abundance, we have inherited this primitive fear of scarcity, while losing out on what the Neanderthals had as a superpower.
Collaboration.
The reason why we are the dominant species on the planet, despite not being the fastest or the strongest is?collaboration.
As McDonalds’ owner Ray Kroc put it, ‘None of us is as good as all of us’.?
It is sad to see that despite an abundance of opportunities, we regress to our primitive behaviour and start looking at members of our own tribes with suspicion.?
We engage in unhealthy competition and fear that our ‘share of the pie’ will diminish if we share or work together with others.
We employ great talent but throttle their capacity by creating mistrust and the threat of other people ‘catching up’. It’s almost like having a Porsche but forcing the driver to only drive by looking through the rear-view mirror.
But, who suffers as a result?
Clients and our people.
Consulting companies have the smartest of people, often the best of thought leadership, and the potential to work with great clients, but their people are prevented from delivering value by the cut-throat competition within.

Excellent article! The Neanderthal reference is definitely insightful. By addressing the issues that impact collaboration, the outcome will be hugely improve the environment for the individual and the team and will lead to better results for all. The imminent disruption to the broken systems and processes will be crucial in helping us evolve the entire working environment. Not only does it improve and strengthen business outcomes but the very act of sharing and working together brings connection which is a key facet for our health and wel-being so it’s also of supreme benefit to the individual.
