Boasting accolades for food, arts, film, and social justice, Portland’s “weirdness” is perhaps one of its greatest assets.?
Portland’s “weirdness” extends beyond these categories, however, and into environmentalism, sustainability, green living, and technology. More than 70 percent of Oregonians say that the protection of the environment should come before economic growth, demonstrating an emphasis on sustainability and urban resilience. Additionally, Portland serves as a hub for technological innovation and growth, with the city experiencing 10% growth in high-tech software and service jobs. On brand with Portland being weird, quirky, and innovative in nature, this city pairs this technology with social responsibility and ethics, trailblazing creative solutions and programs. This combination of priorities has created a city centered around intelligent growth, making Portland a leader in smart city development.

Smart City PDX is an initiative by the City of Portland’s Bureau of Planning and Sustainability designed to leverage and integrate technology and data in order to make a more equitable, efficient, and affordable Portland. The integration of this program has made Portland a leader across the United States and a trailblazer in making equity central to city development.
Core goals of Smart City PDX:

?? Enhance digital privacy rights to protect residents.
?? Prioritize underserved communities in urban planning.
?? Leverage real-time data for smarter air quality and traffic safety policies.
Diving deeper into the work Smart City PDX has done in relation to traffic safety, the program utilizes sensor networks to gather information in high-risk areas surrounding vehicle speeds, pedestrian behavior, and more. With this information, traffic engineers are able to design and redesign intersections and streets with traffic-calming measures and various safety features to reduce congestion, confusion, and collisions.
A key success story is the North Portland Traffic Calming Project (2022):
?? Data showed consistent speeding in six targeted areas, five near schools and youth centers.
