Hi there. The 90s are back.

I'm talking about a renewed focus on the circular economy, a concept popularised at the end of the last century to balance rapid economic growth with a more efficient use of resources. A couple of decades later, it is one of those ideas whose time has come as economies look to deliver on net-zero climate pledges.

This week the UAE approved?22 new policies aimed at accelerating the country's transition to a circular economy, as part of its push towards sustainable economic development. The UAE Circular Economy Council's policies will focus on four main sectors: manufacturing, food, infrastructure and transport.

Eid Mubarak for those who are celebrating.

Be well.

In brief?| The UAE is offering incentives to attract hundreds of technology companies to set up in the country as part of a programme to draw more foreign direct investment (FDI) and position itself as a global tech centre. Under the first phase of the NextGenFDI initiative, the Emirates aims to attract 300 digital companies within the next year with a focus on those led by software developers, data scientists and digital asset entrepreneurs. Incentives include a faster business set-up process, better access to finance, easier visa procedures and attractive property leasing terms.

Quoted?| “We are moving from a regional hub to a global hub, we are competing with the big boys now."

- Dr Thani Al Zeyoudi, Minister of State for Foreign Trade

Why it matters?| The UAE wants to be in the top 10 countries globally for FDI. That goal is not far off: in 2022 it was ranked first in the Arab world and 19th globally, according to the UN Conference on Trade and Development. To achieve its aim, the country is looking to send the message "to companies from Europe, Asia and the Americas that the UAE is the world's best place to live, work, invest and scale", Dr Al Zeyoudi said.

This is a signal.?The semiconductor, aka "chip", is the basic building block of our connected world. Samsung's latest earnings report, and a US-EU agreement on semiconductor investment announced in May, means global suppliers may be leaving the worst of the shortage behind.
