The Future of AI is Specialised and Personal

Artificial intelligence has advanced rapidly in recent years, with systems like ChatGPT demonstrating strong language and reasoning capabilities. However, as impressive as these general AI models are, the future of AI lies not in creating one model that can do everything, but rather in developing specialised and personalised AI assistants tailored to individual users and organisational needs.

Personal AI Assistants?

Advances in natural language processing allow current AI systems to have useful conversations and generate human-like text on a wide range of topics. But for an AI assistant to be truly helpful to an individual user, it needs to go beyond generalised capabilities - it must understand the specifics of that person's life, interests, preferences and goals.??

Future personal AI assistants will leverage multiple data points about their human users including emails, messaging history, documents, schedules, purchases, media consumption and more. This wealth of personalised data allows an AI system to become a customised life-assistant. It can provide personalised recommendations, remind you about upcoming events, offer helpful suggestions tailored specifically to you, and even anticipate your needs.

Apple’s iPhone 15 has a specialised multi core GPU processor for graphics but Large Language Apps are already appearing, but these are still the general purpose LLMs. How long before your iPhone comes with your personal Generative AI onboard, learning more about you all the time and responding to your every request?

Specialized Enterprise AI

Much like personal AI assistants, future AI systems designed for enterprises will also be highly specialised for their specific business environments. While today's large language models allow for some clever conversational applications, they still have limited practical business knowledge.

The AI systems of the future will be fine-tuned on mountains of company data including financial records, operations data, customer history, policies and guidelines. This deep company-specific training will produce AI models with an intricate understanding of that organisation that allows them to take on useful roles - identifying growth opportunities, mitigating risks, increasing efficiency and more based on their enterprise expertise.

Local Installation for Security and Customisation

Rather than expecting a single general intelligence to possess all knowledge, the future of AI lies in specialised assistants focused on playing helpful, supportive roles for the humans they serve, whether employees, customers or individuals. The best way to enable this level of personalisation and customisation is for AI assistants to be installed locally on a user's devices rather than relying solely on cloud-based services.??

Local installation guarantees data privacy and security, while allowing full customisation of the AI to individual needs. As specialised AI assistants become more advanced and trusted, local installation will be key to making these AIs feel like personalised colleagues rather than just smart services. Smarter, customised AI promises a future where this technology feels less like an oracle we passively query but rather more like a capable colleague ready to help us succeed.
