The Future of Agriculture Created by Artificial Intelligence

The combination of artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) is becoming a key tool for improving productivity and sustainability in agriculture. In particular, the technological convergence of AI and IoT is attracting attention as a solution and new opportunity for today's agriculture, which is facing the huge challenges of aging and climate change.

1. Dramatic improvement in productivity and profitability

AI and IoT can collect and analyze data such as crop growth status, soil moisture, and weather conditions in real time to create an optimal cultivation environment. For example, crop harvesting using autonomous robots is playing a major role in solving the problem of labor shortage due to aging and increasing productivity. A Japanese agricultural technology company has built a system in which AI robots move through rice paddies and fields to automatically perform tasks such as sowing and weeding, and automatically inject appropriate amounts of fertilizer and chemicals, which is receiving a great response from aging rural areas.

2. Acceleration of variety development and implementation of customized agriculture

AI can develop varieties that meet the diverse needs of consumers faster and cheaper than before. Digital breeding technology analyzes genetic and environmental data to quickly develop crops that are strong in specific climates and helps prepare for uncertainties caused by climate change. For example, the case of the Rural Development Administration recently introducing low-temperature processing technology and AI analysis to shorten the development time of wheat varieties from 13 years to 7 years is a representative case showing the potential of AI-based breeding.

3. Data-based agriculture for climate change response

AI can analyze climate data to predict crop growth patterns and harvest times, and increase productivity through appropriate management measures. It can predict and prepare for disasters such as floods and droughts in advance, and AI-based irrigation systems optimize resource use by analyzing soil and weather conditions to supply the correct amount of water. Such systems can enable efficient agriculture, especially in countries or regions with water shortages.

4. Need for increased R&D budget

For AI and IoT-based agriculture to achieve these effects, active investment in agricultural research and technology development is essential. Currently, the R&D budget for AI in agriculture is gradually increasing, but it is still insufficient to solve the huge problems of climate change and aging population. Just as advanced countries such as Japan and the Netherlands are actively investing in AI-based agriculture and rapidly applying technology, we also urgently need to increase our budget for technology development and infrastructure expansion.

In a situation where climate change and aging population are accelerating, agricultural innovation through AI is an important key to enabling a sustainable and stable food supply. If investment in the development of agricultural technologies using artificial intelligence and IoT expands beyond the current level, agriculture will establish itself as a leading industry of the future, rather than simply a traditional industry.
