FuturaGene receives the 10th approval for commercial release of genetically modified eucalyptus.

The Brazilian National Biosafety Technical Commission (CTNBio) evaluated and approved on June 13 a 10th dossier for genetically modified (GM) eucalyptus varieties submitted by FuturaGene.

The triple stacked gene combination confers the characteristics of yield enhancement, herbicide tolerance and insect resistance in a new GM eucalyptus variety and in all sub-combinations. The dossier was submitted to CTNBio in compliance with the Biosafety Normative and was evaluated based on scientific studies demonstrated safety for human and animal health, and the environment.

The new GM eucalyptus varieties differ from a triple stacked gene combination approved by CTNBio in March 2024 by virtue of differences in the gene construct conferring herbicide tolerance. They are a valuable addition to our pipeline of GM varieties that enable sustainable intensification of eucalyptus farming by enhancing yield, promoting more efficient use of herbicide, and implementing preemptive pest control.

The new triple stacked varieties, currently under field evaluation will allow more resource-efficient production, reducing operational costs and pesticide use while simultaneously improving worker safety and providing more productive and healthier eucalyptus.

FuturaGene is proud to be the only company globally to have taken GM eucalyptus, from lab to field, providing a pipeline of varieties for a more sustainable and climate-resilient future.

More about FuturaGene approvals:

This is FuturaGene’s tenth approval for genetically modified eucalyptus granted by CTNBio since 2015.

-??????? The world-first approval for its yield-enhanced, GM eucalyptus was granted in 2015.

-??????? FuturaGene has also received five approvals from CTNBio for herbicide-tolerant GM eucalyptus since 2021.

-??????? In March 2023, we received approval for insect-resistant GM eucalyptus.

-??????? The first approval for GM eucalyptus with double-stacked traits, for yield enhancement and herbicide tolerance, was granted in November 2023.

-??????? In March 2024, we received approval for GM eucalyptus with triple-stacked traits, for yield enhancement, herbicide tolerance and insect resistance.

These remain the only genetically modified eucalyptus approved anywhere in the world to date.

At FuturaGene, we believe that biotechnology is a key tool to improve and maintain eucalyptus productivity, allowing for more sustainable production.

Congratulations FuturaGene Ltd.! I worked on eucalyptus for ~15years at ArborGen so I'm well aware of how difficult this has been at all steps along the way, especially with the more desirable clones.
