PART 1.16: MODEL OF GAME - HOW TO MANAGE A FUTSAL GAME

Today I am going to explain the third block of our "Identity Model" in a futsal team. Remember coach that the first block is referring to "Model of game" and the second one to "Training Model".

The third block is related to "Management Futsal Games". As you know our sport, futsal, it is very complex and, because is an indoor game played in a small pitch, there are many situations to control, many inputs to understand.

In this post I want to explain how could we manage as a futsal coach a game. First of all, I like to identify 3 different items in the management:

Let me explain these in detail:

  • Game phases: we could identify 3 different phases that normally happen in a futsal match.
  1. Control phase: when the team feels physical and mental in an excellent status during the game. We are better than our rival and we domain the rhythm of the game and normally the result. Do we need to change something?
  2. Losing control phase: when we can't control the game, the rhythm and our rival is playing better than we do. Some example: the beginning of the second part and our team is playing worst that the first part of the game. How could I change that as a coach?
  3. Excitement phase: induced by internal factors (goals, referees decisions, ...) or external factors (clock or fans), the rhythm of the game suddenly change, normally accelerated. Is it good or bad for our team?
  • Phases domain: Could I domain these phases as a coach? Yes we do! The first step is to detect every phase and after that react.
  • Mechanisms to control phases: How could I detect the phases? The first thing to do as a coach is to teach our players to identify these phases. Try to talk during the game with your players, to give it tips or messages for changing what is happen in the case is not good for us. I want to give you some tools to change phases:
  1. Interruptions: try to slow the game. Use all the rules that our sport allows us.
  2. Time outs: the best way to change a rhythm. Use a time out in a good way because you only have 2 during all the game!
  3. Players changes: change 3 or 4 players at the same time. Before that gives clearly instructions to the new players (tactical things to do for changing the phase).
  4. Defensive or offensive system changes: changing the system is one of the best ways to change the rhythm of the game. If you are using a high pressure system (first line in 30 meters) try to reduce your height to 18 meters. Or, If you are using a 3-1 system try to change a 4-0 trying to control the ball possession.

Could we train all that mechanisms during a training session? Yes we can! How? Introducing in our tasks some psychological components. In the next post I will explain how to do it with some clearly examples. Do not miss out!
