About that Funny Lady...
?
That funny looking lady I wrote about two years ago is in lockdown again at her senior living residence. It’s been about two weeks and it’s looking like it will be a couple more, which means that she and others like her with Alzheimer’s are forced to stay isolated. I’m writing today to call attention to our moms, dads, grandparents, aunts, uncles and old friends who continue to suffer because the science of the pandemic calls for it.
I haven’t heard a peep from anyone doing anything meaningful to help them. Sure, there is the offer of FaceTime. How effective is that for an old woman who also has failing eyesight and poor hearing? Glass window visits weren’t that great when they were in vogue and aren’t practical in winter. There’s always the vaccine and the booster. But, if the first shot landed her in the ER, is that really a good idea? The answer, almost always, is lockdown.
Those who understand the disease (Alzheimer’s) know that social isolation only worsens the condition as does moving or changing environments, so caregivers are stuck. Hearing my mother say, “I miss my family” is heartbreaking beyond measure. I call as often as I can and try to offer her something to smile about.
Most people I talk to have had enough—enough of the virus, the science, the masks, the protocols and the lockdowns. We all have to live with it… deal with it—just as my mother and countless others have been forced to do for too long. ?Face it. Most people wouldn’t last a day under the same conditions.?Imagine how your mom, dad or grandparent would feel.?It's time to stop the madness. Our loved ones deserve better.

3 年Nancy, I'm so sorry for all that your mom, you, and your family are going through -- it's such an extraordinarily difficult time. ?? From seeing this stunning photo of your mom as a young woman and having seen the military photo of your dad that you've posted, I have to say that your parents were a beautiful couple -- you've inherited those genes, certainly.
