Fungi That Eats Plastic!

Did you know?

Our earth has its own miraculous way to protect itself from harmful substances!?

The waste materials we throw, without considering the negative impacts, cause serious damage to the environment. But it has been discovered that the earth is equipped with a built-in natural defense system that enables it to protect from a greater loss- Fungi. Fungi of some certain species break down plastics, polyurethane and other synthetic elements naturally.

Recently, A research team from Royal Netherlands Institute discovered a marine fungus named Periodonium album that can break down polyethylene, a plastic that is generally found in the ocean. Periodonium album with its unique way of functioning, utilizes the UV ray from sunlight to degrade polyethylene plastics. Even though it emits a really small amount of carbon dioxide during plastic degradation, it can degrade plastics at a rate of 0.5% per day. Thus it contributes silently but effectively in saving the ocean.

Apart from the ocean, it's not the only time that researchers found plastic degrading fungi. In 2011, 20 undergraduates from Yale University traveled to Ecuador for research purposes and found plastic eating fungus in Amazon rainforest. They discovered Pestalotiopsis microspora, compatible to degrade polyurethane which is used in various sorts of products such as foams, coatings, adhesives, elastomers etc.?

Also Japan discovered a bacteria named Ideonella sakaiensis that can break down plastic bottles and toys in a landfill back in 2001.?

Scientists did bring the revolution. But, how far has it been implemented? Have we been able to utilize this gift? Our deteriorated and weakened environment answers this question- Not Yet.

Let’s be conscious and work hand-to-hand to facilitate implementing the positive outcomes of these researches for the government. Our collective efforts can lead to a sustainable change and make the world a better living place.
