Funds from Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Help Passenger Rail Industry Expand Network With Lightweight FRP Platforms That Are Quick To Install

The passenger rail industry emerged as a top recipient of funds awarded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law which set aside $102 billion for the expansion of reliable, frequent rail service. In May 2023, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) announced the availability of $5.8 million for the Interstate Rail Compacts (IRC) Program. The monies will provide technical assistance to those tasked with implementing the program, a first step to delivering rail projects in local communities. Current trends indicate passenger and freight activity will more than double by 2050.

Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) is the material of choice for rail systems and transit infrastructure because its lightweight prefabricated panels are corrosion resistant and quick to install. The low maintenance, long service life FRP products include platform and access structures, stair and railing systems, trackside safety surfaces and overhead pedestrian walkways and bridges.
