Fundraising Friday: What do donors want?

Fundraising Friday: What do donors want?

When someone gives to your cause, what do they want? What do they expect?

In my experience, not much.

It boils down to a few simple things.

They want you to notice when they give.

They want to be thanked.

They want stories of impact and growth and change.

They want to make a difference and be part of something that matters -- something real.

They want you to do what you said you'd do with their gift.

They want you to accomplish more with and through you than they ever could on their own.

They want to be invited deep into your mission.

And told the truth.

They want to be included when you celebrate, and when things go sideways.

They want to help.

They want to give.

They want their gift to be the key that unlocks the change they seek -- a catalyst for progress and a beacon of hope.

They want to be part of the solution -- to know their life has meaning.

To feel their impact and create a world they believe in.

So listen to their desires, their hopes, their dreams.

Understand what inspires them.

Communicate openly and honestly.

Show up. Be real.

Be human.

Be you.

And help them see the true power of generosity.

Do these things often enough, and you just might change the world.

It's crucial to keep the focus on what truly matters - the impact on our donors and the lives we touch.

"They want to be invited deep into your mission. And told the truth. They want to be included when you celebrate, and when things go sideways." This is so spot-on. I've learned that those who support this mission want to know about all of it - the exciting opportunities and the greatest challenges. They're smart folks - they know not everything goes the way you hope at times. Great stuff, Michael Mitchell!
