?FUNDING POTENTIAL – PART 1
?I am reviewing the topic of funding potential in preparation for my presentation on Friday at Founded in FOCO.
?We start by asking how much funding any individual, business, or organization may raise. Then, we identify individual limitations that may legally or practically prevent or set a maximum capital goal.
?This analysis supports the development of a capital strategy, identification of best investor candidates, and planning of a capital campaign.
?Limitations may fall into one of the following groups:
1.???? The type of funding needed
2.???? Who are you
3.???? Law and regulations
4.???? Investor candidates
5.???? Your community
?Type of Funding Needed
?Funding commonly is one of three types:
1.???? Charitable contribution
2.???? Rewards transaction
3.???? Investment
?Who Are You
?The characteristics of the funding seeker may open or close a door to a source of funding or change the level of competition. Are you an individual, business, charity, government agency, or other legal entity? Are you male, female, or transgender? Are you a veteran or fall within an honored class? How old are you? Where do you live or conduct business? Are you in an urban or rural area?
?Laws and Regulations
?Raising funding is regulated with different government agencies creating and enforcing the rules. In addition to the type of funding and who you are, limitations are set on who may be an investor candidate, how much they may invest, where the investor candidate lives, and how long you can engage in fundraising.
?Investor Candidates
?Where it may be possible to pitch for funding, success may be limited by the type and amount of capital that the investor candidate has in hand at the moment and the type and level of motivation to invest.
?Your Community
?As a practical limitation, investor candidates cannot invest if they do not know you. As a further limitation, they will not invest if they do not trust you.

The funding potential of any any situation or opportunity is dependent on a large number of factors. To be successful, the seeker of funding must thread the needle to match their needs with those of investor candidates within all existing limitations.
FOUNDED IN FOCO (FORT COLLINS STARTUP WEEK)
?This Friday, March 8, I will present a workshop on What is Your Funding Potential? from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm in Fort Collins, Colorado, at the Founded in FOCO event.
?The five-day event offers 100+ sessions with 100+ local experts to help you?spark innovative ideas,?learn from peers, and?build relationships.
?SUCCESSFUL FUNDING
?Chris Miller was my guest Tuesday on the seventh Successful Funding show. Chris is Chair of the Board of the National Center for Community Capital (NC3). NC3 is advocating for the establishment of Diversified Community Investment Funds – locally owned and operated funds to address the capital needs of a community, including its small businesses and community projects. Many communities are looking to add local funding to their toolbox for housing, preserving existing businesses, supporting new businesses, and those other projects that never seem to get to the top of anyone’s list.
Next week, on Tuesday, March 12, my guest will be Wayne McDaniel with the SaT Catalyst Fund which is a donor advised funding making investments in impact businesses. Donor advised funds represent a source of funding that matches individuals benefiting charities with their donations while obtaining tax deductions with the needs of businesses for investment.
