Funding the Metaphor - Update
Part 2 of Who pays the piper, calls the tune?
"?If you want to change the world, you have to change the metaphor." This advice by Joseph Campbell to Bill Moyers was passed on to LBJ with obvious consequences. LBJ, who replaced the assassinated JFK, could not change the metaphor and create The Great Society and fund the Vietnam War at the same time.?
In addition to having the discipline and courage to change the world, leadership and funding are required.?
What is of consequence and relevance in all this is that Joseph Campbell inspired George Lucas and Steven Spielberg who have indelibly influenced American thinking about such subjects as D-Day, the Holocaust, Antisemitism and Anti-intellectualism in America and the world.?
Steven Spielberg has utilized the music of John Williams to convey the imagery and sound of Jaws and Raiders of the Lost Ark.
I’ll also cite just 2 cases: Schindler’s List and The Pianist.?
Spielberg’s Schindler’s List:
portrays the vulnerability and courage of the innocent in the face of atrocity.?
The Pianist?juxtaposes and contrasts Chopin’s études, the Polish nationalism - of Civilization, of Chopin’s music - with Naziism.?
Spielberg uses film and music to depict our common search for humanity and civilization in the midst of war.?
Denouement
In Saving Private Ryan, Steven Spielberg again engages the extraordinary collaboration of John Williams and an unforgettable soundtrack (https://youtu.be/fypQMTY8H9Y ) that includes Hymn to the Fallen - so fitting for Memorial Day and Remembrance Day.
