FUNDING POINT – FUNDABILITY

Every startup business may need funding, but not all startups are fundable. There are many reasons why a small business may not be able to raise funding. This Instant Funding newsletter attempts to identify these reasons and offer solutions where they may be available.

?It is an unfortunate, incorrect expectation that every entrepreneur will raise funding. The media, entrepreneur programs, and economic development programs establish this expectation every time they tell anyone to quit their job, take control of their life, and become an entrepreneur.

?There is a continually perpetuating myth that any entrepreneur can raise funding anytime they want by simply declaring that they are a small business and stating their need for funding.

Every entrepreneur can point to a business that raised funding when it should not have. Too often, everyone points at a business that raised money that is exceptional with capabilities and characteristics which the average business will never attain. There are many consultants and businesses that will point at themselves or a business and claim that anyone can raise funding just like they did. Statistics do not back up these claims.

?Raising funding is an activity like any other. It requires planning and execution. It requires time and money. In many cases, an entrepreneur may be able to raise funding without expert assistance. As an entrepreneur myself, I know the default tendency is to ‘do it yourself’ (DIY). There is a certain pride in accomplishment when succeeding in doing something for the first time.

?However, every activity has a certain probability of success or failure. An entrepreneur should do what they can to gain as much control over all aspects of their fundraising campaign and leave as little as possible to chance.

?At the recent SuperCrowd 2024, a panel of investment crowdfunding operators pointed out that each business seeking funding through the conduct of an investment crowdfunding campaign needed to bring to the platform virtually everyone needed to invest. There is no large body of people standing by waiting to place their money with the next entrepreneur in line. In addition to all of the knowledge and skills needed to raise money through a simple capital campaign, an entrepreneur seeking to raise money through investment crowdfunding must also ‘build a crowd’ and ‘manage a crowd’ in order to raise money in a large number of small-dollar investments.

?Every business opportunity must demonstrate that it has a good product or service that provides value to its customers in a large enough volume and within a competitive marketplace to enable the business to make a profit over time. Even then, it may not be fundable.

?

?SUPERCROWD CHICAGO

?SuperCrowd Chicago will be held on June 12th in Chicago. It represents the next opportunity for people interested in investing through investment crowdfunding and for businesses seeking to raise funding through investment crowdfunding to come together, meet, and share information.

?I will present a workshop for small businesses, community leaders, and service providers on how to craft investment offers that are customer-focused.

?CAMP WAPIYAPI AND COLFAX MARATHON

?I will be participating in the shortest part of the Colfax Marathon on May 18th – the 5K (run, jog, walk, enjoy being outdoors) to raise money for Camp Wapiyapi – an outdoor camp for kids with pediatric cancer that will hold camping sessions in late June (male volunteers are still needed as camper companions).

?If you are interested in also raising money through this fun event, there is still time to register and sign up to support Camp Wapiyapi.

?Party Gets Started With the Colfax 5K

?Thousands will gather on Saturday, May 18th for a 5K to kickoff Denver's largest running weekend that includes a well-organized course, dogs, and race shirt.

?The finish line has food and DJ Sinna-G (on-air radio personality from 100.3 FM) to keep the party going!

?The party starts in Denver's City Park at the same spot as Sunday's Marathon. Run a PR or walk it with friends and oh yeah, dogs are invited! They will have a blast with their own bandana and hundreds of their friends!

?DON COHEN SHOW

I was a guest on Don Cohen’s show on LinkedIn Live on Monday and Wednesday this week. I enjoy being a guest and engaging in conversations with other guests and with Don on building communities and using LinkedIn as a communication channel. Every show is its own adventure as we start with a word of the day and then see where the conversation goes from there.

Don is an expert on LinkedIn, particularly on the use of Live streaming to build brands and communities. We will discuss using LinkedIn as a social media platform for building communities that support raising funding.

All shows where I have been a guest can be viewed on Don Cohen's LinkedIn page under Posts.
