Functional Medicine: A New Way Out for the Great Indian Diabetes Epidemic!

The diabetes epidemic in India might not ring a bell in your years, but if someone is telling you that there is a way out of this never-ending diabetic phenomenon; then you should surely hear what they have to say; right?

However, before that lets once have a look over why diabetes is such a debatable notion in India right now.

  • The prestigious World Health Organisation has outrightly claimed that 98 million Indian citizens might be affected by Type-2 diabetes in India by 2030.
  • Almost 8 per cent of our current population is diabetic.
  • Stanford University has made claims that half the population of the world in the future might not have access to insulin support.
  • A study that was conducted by the International Diabetes Federation has revealed that 629 million citizens of Earth will have diabetes by 2045 and the most mind-boggling fact is that the number concluded is a rise of 48 per cent. Yes, you read it right the first time. The diabetic epidemic will rise by 48 per cent, which means that it would be half of the new population.

The facts and figures that have been mentioned above are horrifying and does create an urgency for a comprehensive solution for this issue. However, is there a solution available for this epidemic?

Does Conventional Medicine have the answers?

Well, conventional medicine is aimed towards managing our diabetes, but it nowhere says that a person once diagnosed with such a condition can make a possible recovery. By recovery, I mean to say that can that man or woman be the same as he or she used to be earlier.

Five questions we need to ask from conventional medicine experts with regards to the recovery of a diabetic patient:

  1. Can that person attain the same productivity levels once was capable of?
  2. Can that person get rid of all the metabolic difficulties?
  3. Can once again that person go back on a diet that isn't restrictive of his cravings?
  4. Can that person live free from the health risks and dangers associated with diabetes?
  5. MOST IMPORTANTLY CAN THAT PERSON GET RID OF HIS REGULAR DIABETIC MEDICATIONS?

I mean imagine if you can roam around anywhere in the world and you don't have to carry your diabetes monitoring device!

Wouldn't that bring much-needed ease into your life????

I know you all have gone into that daydreaming phase in your heads right now if you have diabetes, but let me tell you with the conviction that recovery in diabetes is possible. The rising behemoth of diabetes in India can be put to an end if we collectively start walking on the right path.

 What's the right path?

There is one, and it's called functional medicine. You might have heard this name for the very first time, but this new medically proven methodology of healing and wellness can wave a new golden path for all of us.

Now let's understand what precisely functional medicine is...

Functional medicine says I will first identify the root cause of your disease, and then I only I will start with your required treatment. I will not suppress your symptoms by giving you conventional specific drugs but would instead do investigations which would give your doctor the evidence of your root cause behind your illness or disease.

The functional medicine approach looks your entire body as a whole integrated system, and your whole system is treated to treat whatever disease the patient has. The functional medicine is truly a revolution of the 21st Century in the field of medical science.

Functional medicine approach is what we need when it comes to eliminating chronic and auto-immune diseases from our lives.

Functional Medicine's role in Diabetes

The approach for diabetes remains the same. Functional medicine is universal. Let's take an example here:

Rahul recently observed that his blood sugar levels are rising. He went to his family doctor, and he was then diagnosed with Type-II diabetes. He was prescribed the standard medications. However, a functional medicine expert would not have done the same.

You need to understand that rising blood sugar levels is a symptom, but not the root cause of Rahul's diabetic condition.

The issue that is not addressed in conventional medicine is of insulin resistance. It is the area that should be focused, but it isn't.

Second is the chronic stress which is left out of focus from conventional practice. Chronic stress is now being considered one of the prime most concern of many of the diseases.

Gut health is another and a very crucial health indicator that is missed out. An apple a day might keep the doctor away, but an unhealthy gut will always keep your doctor near you.

Sleep deprivation has been highly linked with insulin resistance. Now have you ever considered such health factors for your diabetic condition?

I guess you hadn't, but a functional medicine practitioner would go to deep lengths to understand your lifestyle and routine to make the necessary changes in your life. Be it routine, psychological, physical, physiological, or hormonal; your functional medicine expert will keep you covered.

These five fundamental differences mentioned above are enough to advocate the truth of functional medicine. The new methodology of treatment has given tremendous results in diabetes all over the world and also amongst my regular patients.

If you have diabetes and wish to get rid of all your discomforts associated with being diabetic, then you are only a consultation away from finding the doctor that you always had been looking for.

A message to all my readers...

"Sky isn't the limit when there are footprints on the moon."

We should fight the diabetes epidemic by holding our hands together, and we shall overcome all the obstacles known for this kind of condition.

Nice thoughts Dr. Priti, but I doubt the stats presented in the image above. If women diabetics grew by 109% & Men by 126%, then how come the combined growth be more than any of these 2 numbers (you have presented a 128% growth !). So, if 128% is incorrect, then i doubt the other 2 numbers as well.? However, all other facts presented are so true and reflect poor & incorrect inapropriate diagnosis/? treatment of diabetes in India. Thanks for sharing this..
