Functional fixedness

Functional fixedness

“The mind that opens to a new idea never returns to its original size.” Albert Einstein

This newsletter is all about sharing ideas and resources for leaders who build better businesses and explore new ways of running an organisation. Open your mind to new insights that might impact the well-being of your organisation.

And that's what I'll do again today...

Things to Explore

Do you want to transform your organisation into a self-managing organisation? Corporate Rebels shares 5 steps in the transformation process and 9 experiments to try. These practices have been roadtested in more than 150 companies.

“Practice, practice, practice.”?Good advice if you want to become a top-notch leader. Luckily, HBR shared The 6 fundamental skills every leader should practice. These are not mysterious and certainly in reach for every (aspiring) leader.

In a thriving organisation, good collaboration is critical. However, how can you fix the partnership when it fails, and how can you, as a leader, diagnose your team's dysfunction? This article in MIT Sloan Review provides 6 common patterns you can look at.

Have you ever heard of "functional fixedness"? I discovered this term via simone van neerven in an article written for MTSprout

Functional fixedness describes why we cannot use an object in ways beyond its traditional use. Functional fixedness is a phenomenon found in problem-solving psychology and affects an individual’s ability to innovate and be creative when solving challenges.

Actions you can take to overcome functional fixedness:

  • Encourage diverse perspectives
  • Employ creativity techniques
  • Promote cross-functional collaboration

Things to attend

One of my most inspiring teachers, Caroline Ward , is hosting a new program in Finding Your Flow, a systemic approach to growing your business or career. This program will give you the clarity and freedom to increase your service and your impact. It will support you in stepping up into the work-life wants you, making a more outstanding contribution, and receiving a greater reward.

So that's it for this week. I hope to have you inspired.

Have a great weekend and till next week...
