This week I thought I’d share something I’ve been experimenting with for a few years, that a couple of my clients have also been testing out recently to great effect:
Purposely trying to have fun!
Bear with me here, because I’m not being flippant!
Having fun is something that’s really easy to dismiss, particularly when it comes to work-related goals and dreams.
Think about it. If you have a career goal, whether it’s tied to progression, a side-step or a complete career change, having fun probably isn’t part of your strategy?
And it’s no wonder. When it comes to work, our cultural and social conditioning deems fun impractical and irrelevant.
The problem with this is that our choices and approaches are guided instead by what we’ve been led to believe is “practical”, “sensible” or “realistic”.
But that misses a huge opportunity and is also likely to steer us down a cheerless, hard, or worse still, ill-judged path.
To counter this, my clients and I have been applying a conscious filter to our choices and strategies:
What feels joyous, vibrant or adventure-filled?
Rather than accepting goals or the route to them as a blood, sweat and tears effort, we are deliberately following the energy of what feels most fun ??
As part of this approach, we’re being very intentional about what we say YES and NO to, personally and professionally.
This has seen us say Yes to dreams that make us feel alive; to small supporting steps that take us in that direction and feel energetically aligned; and to feel-good ideas, opportunities and people.
By contrast, any idea or goal that kills our spirit or leaves us energetically flat or negative gets a heartfelt No.
The result?
Apart from being genuinely excited about what we are working towards, and feeling uplifted, engaged and entertained, we’ve all made serious progress!
The truth is, when goals and actions are built on an intentional foundation of fun, it generates a whole new level of personal commitment, which creates undeniable momentum. ?
So if you are struggling to set or pursue work dreams or goals, try purposely aiming to have fun.
Firstly, ensure what you’re targeting gives you an honest?energetic lift. Then make a list of what you’re going to say YES and NO to, which supports you in pursuit of that thing.
I can promise you this. Whatever happens, it will leave you feeling awesome, although it’s highly likely to propel your progress significantly too!

3 个月Like this Alison O'Leary and convinced it’s true. Wondering if in addition to being intentional re goals / purpose that lift, this might mean being intentional about HOW we do things in ways that lift. So the hard tasks can be more doable?
