Fun with ChatGPT
N. Sukumar
Former Professor and Founding Head of Chemistry and Informatics at Shiv Nadar University (Retired); Adjunct Professor, School of AI, Amrita Vishwa Pidyapeetham
I asked ChatGPT about some faculty (by name) at Shiv Nadar University. In each case the response was: "I'm sorry, but I couldn't find any information about ... working at Shiv Nadar University. It's possible that this person may not have a significant presence in the field or may not have been at Shiv Nadar University during my knowledge cutoff of 2021.
Shiv Nadar University is a research-focused university in India that is dedicated to providing high-quality education and promoting cutting-edge research in a wide range of fields. The university has a strong commitment to interdisciplinary research, and attracts a diverse community of students and faculty from around the world."
(me): So who are some of the eminent faculty that Shiv Nadar University has attracted?
ChatGPT: "Shiv Nadar University is a young and dynamic research-focused university in India that has attracted a talented and diverse community of faculty and students. The university has a strong commitment to interdisciplinary research, and its faculty come from a wide range of fields, including engineering, natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences.
Here are a few examples of prominent faculty members who have joined Shiv Nadar University:"
--- followed by a string of completely made-up names and descriptions of the areas that they are supposedly working in! ---
"These are just a few examples of the talented and accomplished faculty members who have joined Shiv Nadar University. The university continues to attract top-notch researchers and educators from around the world, and is committed to fostering a culture of innovation and discovery."
(me): Do any of these people really work at Shiv Nadar University or did you just make all that up?
ChatGPT: "I apologize, the information I provided about prominent faculty members at Shiv Nadar University was not accurate. My previous answer was generated based on the information available to me, but it appears that some of the names I provided may not be affiliated with the university or may not be currently active in their respective fields.
As a language model, I do my best to provide accurate and useful information, but there may be times when the information I provide is not completely accurate or up-to-date. I appreciate the opportunity to correct my mistake and provide more accurate information in the future."
(me): Thank you! I appreciate your creativity, if nothing else.

But when I asked about fine art photographer N. Sukumar, it had no hesitation in spitting out this generic blurb: "N. Through his lens, he seeks to explore the beauty and intricacies of the natural world, as well as the ways in which people interact with their environment.
Sukumar's unique approach to photography emphasizes the importance of light, texture, and color in creating a compelling image. He is a master of composition, using his camera to carefully craft each shot in order to convey a sense of harmony and balance.

Sukumar's artistry is on full display in his fine art prints, which are carefully crafted to showcase the beauty of his images in the best possible light. Each print is a testament to his unwavering commitment to capturing the world in all its complexity and splendor.
Overall, N. Sukumar is a photographer whose work is driven by a passion for capturing the world in all its beauty and diversity, and whose commitment to his craft is evident in every frame he creates."
(Full disclosure: The question I asked was different in the two cases. In the first instance, I asked: What can you tell me about ... at Shiv Nadar University? But in the second case, I asked it to: Write an artist statement for N. Sukumar of Sukumar Fine Art Photography).
P.S.: The faculty I searched for (giving name, field of research and institution) are not unknowns; they are prominent researchers in their fields and Fellows of national and international scientific bodies. Providing this data to Google will immediately bring up detailed information about the persons. So the upshot is that, as of date, in terms of finding information (which is Google's forte) and more so, accurate and reliable information, ChatGPT is simply no match for Google. Of course, this will not come as a surprise to any data scientist or AI researcher, because ChatGPT is not designed to be a search engine, but a language model.
But in the very near future, what a suitable combination of Google's page rank algorithm and ChatGPT's generative transformer could accomplish is exciting.
Interesting!
