It's the last day of July. I feel like I say this all the time but - how did that happen? This summer is FLYING by. While summer represents a notion of relaxation, and frolicking in the surf, for those of us with MS it's much more associated with heat exhaustion and the onset of new and super-fun symptoms! So - I'm good with it getting on down the road and ushering in Fall. ??? Don't get me wrong - I am finding ways to have fun this summer. Just last night - an absolutely beautiful evening with a lovely breeze in Virginia Beach - my youngest daughter asked me to go with her to a concert at the oceanfront. The band was Dog Park, a band freshly graduated from the University of Richmond. They are really good. They're innovative and yet, I could hear the 80's influence. The lead singer even reminded me of Geddy Lee of Rush. OK - I'm showing my music geek side. Suffice to say - I had a blast being with my sweet daughter Reagan on a beautiful evening listening to some good music. I hope you're finding opportunities to enjoy this season as well.
Shall we take a look??
1.? This one made me laugh - and, it is another of those "no shit Sherlock" moments:?Backward walking speed reserve, or the difference between an individual’s preferred and maximal backward walking speed, was associated with disease severity in patients with MS, according to a study published in?Multiple Sclerosis and Related Disorders.? Going backward is how I fell and fractured my pelvis a year and a half ago. I highly recommend you don't try it. I'm always here for you with sage advice. ??? ?Backward Walking Speed Reserve Reflects Disease Severity in Patients With MS
2.? As if having this stupid disease wasn't enough - getting a solid diagnosis can be tough too. Especially if you're "older" (I hate the term - and all the ageism that goes with it. I had my first baby at 36 and was deemed "mother of advanced maternal age" ?? How rude!!)??Older adults are often misdiagnosed. Specialized ERs and trained clinicians can help?*you can listen to this one!
3.? I know some folks are scared of AI but I'm excited by it. Things like this next story are one reason why:?AI Eye Scans a New Diagnostic Tool for Multiple Sclerosis?
4.??Kesimpta (ofatumumab) is more effective than Aubagio (teriflunomide) among people with MS from ethnically diverse groups, including Black and African American, Hispanic and Latino, and Asian individuals, according to an analysis of pooled clinical trial data. Isn't that interesting???? Historically, there hasn't been diversity in clinical testing. That needs to end now. Clearly - there are differences in how the meds work amongst varying ethnically diverse groups.?Kesimpta outperforms Aubagio among ethnically diverse groups
5.??A West Virginia University immunologist is exploring how the interaction between two types of immune cells within the central nervous system covering causes multiple sclerosis to develop. The findings could provide a pathway to new strategies for treating the disease and other neurological disorders.??WVU researchers explore immune cell interactions in multiple sclerosis
6.? Big news at the National MS Society: they?named Tim Coetzee, PhD, president and chief executive officer.? He had been the?chief advocacy, services, and science officer for 24 years. Seems like quite a lengthy apprenticeship!! ????National MS Society names Coetzee president and CEO
