When considering renovating your old bathroom and changing from the 1970 avocado bathroom suite with a shag-pile carpet to the clear, uncluttered and easy to maintain bathroom there are always several questions that arise.
1) Wetroom or Shower tray?
2) What colour tiles?
3) What style of bathroom suite?
4) How much will it all cost?
…then when searching on line and looking for ideas you come across the idea of having part tiled room or a fully tiled room. This is a real issue as on the one had the fully tiled room is what you’ve been looking and on the other hand the half tile room looks like it could be a more cost-effective option! So where do we go from here?
Let’s look at the options – Fully Tiled Bathroom:
- More tiles are needed – but it looks cleaner and somehow make the room feel bigger.
- No skirting boards are needed as tiles can finish down onto the finished floor surface. This will save the time and money associated with installation and subsequent painting / maintenance.
- No finish skimming of the walls is required so this saves time and money. You can simply install the NoMorePly tile backing board system and tile direct on to it. This will not only save you time and money but offer a stronger and water resistant background to tile onto.
- No need to paint the walls required so this saves more time and money.
- If a wetroom is being installed (Kaskade, NoMorePly etc.) then fully tiled is always the way forward…
- Over all easier to maintain and keep looking in showroom condition.
Let’s look at the options – Part or Half Tiled Bathroom:
- Less tiles are needed obviously so it could work out cheaper on the tile purchase.
- Can actually work out more expensive as in most cases of a half-tile option we tend to want a feature tile or mosaic which is often more expensive per m2.
- You will need to install skirting boards on any walls that are not tiled. This will mean an extra tradesman (chippy) in and additional maintenance.
- Any walls in the non-tiled areas may need skimming if they are to be decorated – so another tradesman in (decorator).
- Un-tiled walls will require ongoing snagging / decorating.
- The room will still look great and if you used the NoMorePly Tile backing board system on the walls and floor you can skim (plaster) onto this – so at least you have a water-resistant substrate behind the decorated areas that won’t breakdown, mold or crack like other substrates – also enables you to fix directly into the NoMorePly board without using plasterboard screws or other specialist fixing methods.
Summary
Having considered all the options above it would seem better go for the fully tiled option…Still using the NoMorePly Backing board system and without a doubt installing a Kaskade or NoMorePly wetroom try…this will give you the ultimate bathroom/showering experience without running away with the £’s as well as making your life easier with the maintenance and cleaning…

7 年thanks Andre van der Saag i fully agree some great finishes can be accomplished by using these other surfaces and you can still use NoMorePly behind them :)
