WOMAN IN CONSTRUCTION WEEK. (March 3 – 9,?2024) Women In Construction Week, observed during the initial week of March annually, sheds light on the contributions of female construction workers. Despite the longstanding perception of construction as a predominantly male field, recent years have witnessed a shift. The event underscores the evolving landscape of the construction sector, where women's representation has been on the rise. In 2018, merely 9.9% of construction roles were held by women, a figure that climbed to nearly 11% by 2020. This upward trajectory signifies promising prospects for women pursuing careers in construction. Women In Construction Week serves as a platform to honor current female professionals in the field and to inspire more women to explore opportunities within the industry.

MaryAnn Mandel, assistant project manager, shares her advice for future women in construction, stating “Inspire the next generation, be a positive role model and be excited about what you do; there are so many facets within the construction industry that are rewarding for women.” Read more below #WICWeek24

Women in construction are not only working to build some of the country’s largest and most important projects, but they also are leaders in another important area: helping to recruit more women into the industry. As we celebrate Women in Construction Week, I reflect on my 13-year journey within the construction industry. Over the years, I've witnessed a gradual but significant shift towards recognising the valuable contributions of women in construction. However, it's only been in the last 5 years that we've truly begun to see a notable recognition of our work in what has traditionally been a male-dominated environment. Working in such a challenging yet rewarding field has its own set of hurdles, especially when navigating through a predominantly male workforce. But let's remember: women belong in construction just as much as anyone else. To all the incredible women in construction, let's continue breaking barriers, shattering stereotypes, and paving the way for future generations of women in this dynamic industry. #WomenInConstruction #BreakingBarriers #DiversityAndInclusion

Women in Construction Week (WIC Week), celebrated from March 3-9, 2024, is an annual event organized by the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) to highlight and promote the significant role of women in the construction industry. First held in 1998, WIC Week has evolved and expanded over the years, featuring a variety of events organized by local chapters, such as high school presentations, job site tours, luncheons, and virtual events. The theme for the 26th annual WIC Week, "Keys to the Future," emphasizes the crucial contributions of women in shaping the construction industry's future. Construction firms of all sizes are encouraged to support their female employees by participating in WIC Week activities, and individuals can find local events through the event calendar provided by NAWIC. The week-long celebration acknowledges the diverse paths women take in the construction field, from building safer roads and enhancing transportation to contributing to the logistics sector and water infrastructure development. The construction industry has seen a growing presence of women, with their numbers reaching almost 11% in 2022. Notably, the gender pay gap in construction is narrower compared to other industries, with women earning over 95% of what men make in similar roles. This week we celebrate Women in Construction. But what does that mean....how do you celebrate? -Acknowledge the women whom you work next to! Learn and understand their challenges so that you know whether you can offer support. -Be an Advocate! Through your learning and understanding speak up and spread awareness in order to help us break down barriers and speak up when you are witness to any form of discrimination. -Educate our youth! Many young girls may not be aware of the incredible opportunities that construction careers can offer. -Challenge your company to make change! What percentage of women work and are hired at your company? How are they making efforts to diversify the organization? How does your company support women who work there? I want to see the next generation of young women entering the workforce, especially in the construction industry, continue to... -see less hurdles and more doors being opened -see less discrimination and more recognition and acknowledgement, and -see less fear and more confidence! "The way we see women in construction has come a long way. It used to be this male-dominated scene, but things are changing. More opportunities are opening up and there's a push for diversity in the field. You've got women breaking stereotypes and showing they can rock it in different roles. While we've made progress, there's more work to be done for construction to be a truly inclusive space." - What is your favorite part about working in the construction industry? "My favorite part about working in the construction industry is the incredible women I get to work alongside.
