In which I share how and why your doubts get in the way, share my most recent story of taking messy action, and give you 6 steps to keep taking action, even when your subconscious is yelling at you to stop!
Before I get started, I want to ask you a question... What idea, project, or offer are you sitting on right now? You know, that really important one that could change the course of your business, life, or leadership. The one that you were so excited about when you first came up with the idea, but which has become mired in doubt...
Read on to find out why this happens, and what you can do about it...
Imagine this...
You're living happily in your comfort zone. when suddenly BOOM!! inspiration strikes. You get that spark of creativity or insight. You connect with a powerful vision for the future.?
Feels good, doesn’t it!?
You’re buzzing with excitement and possibility. You can think of ways you could make it happen. You think about the future that you want to create. You have a powerful state of excitement in you.?
Welcome to the FEAR Zone
But then… you start to feel like something’s not quite right. You start to experience feelings of fear and trepidation. Doubts creep into your mind about your idea, and suddenly things don’t seem so rosy.?
Welcome to the Fear Zone. Your host is your subconscious mind, which controls around 95% of your thought processes, and which has been alerted to the prospect of change by the excitement of your great new idea. And to your subconscious mind, change equals the unknown, and the unknown equals danger.?Your subconscious will go to any lengths to keep you safe - even though it doesn't need to.
Deploying DOUBT
What your subconscious mind does next is incredibly sneaky. It uses DOUBT and DISCOMFORT to help guide you back to the safety of your comfort zone.?
The discomfort feels unbearable until you end up subconsciously creating obstacles, drama, and self-sabotage. The doubts creep in and question your ability to take it forwards, and before you know it, you’re regretting having the idea in the first place. The trouble is, in most cases, all this happens under the radar of your conscious mind, and to your thinking brain, all these doubts and fears and excuses seem entirely logical and reasonable.
So what can you do about this, especially given that a lot of it is happening below the level of your consciousness? Perhaps it might help if I give you an example from my very recent experience.?
My own 'messy' action
So last week, I gave my first training webinar since pivoting my business from to include consultancy. This was big for me as I’d had a real hang up about talking about my consultancy, and the experience and results it was built on.?This was something I really wanted to do, not least because I have a powerful process that can really help business owners to make more sales and scale their business in a next level way. And yet…?
I had all sorts of fears and doubts sneaking around my mind. "This is never going to work", I told myself. "Nobody is going to register, and even if they do, nobody is going to turn up". "And even if they do, they won’t book a strategy call". "And I can’t possibly talk about it that much in the 10 days before – people will get really annoyed with me". You get the picture...
The irony was, I was pretty relaxed about actually creating and delivering the webinar, it was all the stuff around it that was causing me stress.?Yet I gave the live webinar on Wednesday 1st?March. I had 24 people registered and 9 attended live. And it went down really well.?
So what was different this time to all those other times when I’d listened to the doubts, crept back to my comfort zone, and played it small??
So what made the difference?
Well for one, I had a great coach who doesn’t take excuses for an answer… secondly I had a great process to follow. It was all laid out in front of me – even if I was trying to find reasons not to use it. Thirdly I knew how successful and powerful this process was, because it had worked for my coach and the many people he works with.
This helped to rule out any objective reason for me not to take action.?

Most importantly I knew deep down I really wanted to do this. It was an important next step to help me get to the next level in my business, and so I dug deep into my word for 2023 - I was RESOLUTE.
All of which helped me to detach from the outcome completely. Rather than jumping straight to an expectation that I HAD to get loads of people there and make loads of sales, I simply made following the process and holding the webinar the goal. That way, anything else was a bonus!?
And that’s what I did. I simply followed each day’s instructions, posting and emailing according to the schedule, following up with people who were interested, preparing the webinar etc etc. That way there was never any debate, and when those doubts crept in, I reminded myself that my only goal was to follow the process to the end. Everything else was secondary.?
Which changed everything...
Because I was relaxed and not trying to create a specific outcome, I was able to have fun and experiment. I let go of fears, and because of that people were drawn to the event. I let go of trying to create calls, and people actually reached out to book calls before I even held the webinar. I let go of making sales, and I’ve had one of the most successful months in my business.??
So what can YOU do?
Here are 6 steps to help you take action - even (especially) when you're full of doubt:
Step 1:?Get really clear on WHAT it is you are trying to do or create. So it might be a launching a live webinar, coaching programme or product. It could be a new strategy. It might be updated branding or a new business direction. Or giving your first keynote talk. Just be clear on the ‘thing’.?
Step 2:?Next, get clear on WHY you are doing this. How will learning and implementing this take your business forwards? For me, learning how to do webinars is a critical part of taking my consultancy forwards. Creating a coaching programme might be the tool to help you scale your business. Launching your new branding could be an important part of your business identity. You get the picture.?
Step 3:?Find somebody who has had success in what you’re looking to do. There is no sense in trying to reinvent the wheel, and holding yourself back from reaching out for help is a big way your subconscious keeps you trapped. Learn from those who have learned before you. Who can keep you from making the mistakes that they made. Who can vastly speed up your process, reduce the stress and uncertainty, and keep you accountable.
Step 4:?Work with that person so that you can use their process, their recipe for success. They may have spent years perfecting it, so it makes sense to use something that’s already working. It can feel scary to make that investment in yourself, but trust me, it is far better than wasting time, energy and money trying to figure it out for yourself, especially when you don't know what you don't know.?
Step 5:?Then FOLLOW THE PROCESS. You have a series of stepping stones laid out for you. Follow, and embrace them, rather than trying to fight them. Because they are the best antidote for your doubts. If the process has worked for many people before you, there really is no reason it won’t work for you.
Step 6:?Detach from any outcome other than following the process. That is your goal, to go from the first step to the last, learning, understanding and growing all the way.
That's when the MAGIC happens
Because when you get to the end and you’ve actually done the THING you wanted to, you now know that you CAN do it. You now have a process which is familiar to you. And because it is familiar, your subconscious no longer sounds the alarm when you think about doing it. So the next time it will be easier, and you can look at improving each step.
So now think back to that idea, project, or programme that you've been sitting on... I DARE you to take the first of these steps to help you take that forwards - because I know deep down you really want to!
