Full Circle: Life, Work and Balance in the Expanding World of ABL
Brown & Brown (Previously ABL Group)
Northern Ireland's leading commercial insurance broker and risk advisors. Whatever your business- we'll take care of it.
by Andrea Fanning, Sales & Marketing Executive
I embarked on my ABL Group journey in November 2016, stepping into the role of Contact Manager. This wasn't my first foray into the insurance world, as I brought a decade of experience from another global insurance broker to the table.?
It’s funny that I worked in that global firm and moved to ABL which was of course locally owned and operated but over the past eight years it grew exponentially, welcoming many of my former WTW colleagues when we acquired their NI business and is now part of Brown & Brown - one of the largest insurance intermediaries in the world!
Life definitely moves in circles, and that’s more apparent than ever in the world of Northern Ireland insurance!?
My career has always been anchored in Sales and Marketing, beginning with a lively stint at Pigsback.com, where I navigated the world of marketing discount experiences. Following the closure of their NI office, I transitioned through roles in FMCG and then Willis before finding my place at ABL Group.
Initially, the transition to ABL felt daunting. Yet, it wasn't long before the team's warmth and support made me feel right at home.?
What stands out about working at ABL is the sense of camaraderie. I've forged great friendships here, and the fast-paced environment ensures there's never a dull moment. The job is perpetually changing, and the scope of our company just keeps multiplying, which is exciting to be part of.?
Joining forces with Brown & Brown has been a remarkable experience. Being part of such a successful global organisation opens up new opportunities for our business and all of us as insurance professionals. I deeply appreciate Brown & Brown's commitment to teammate development, health, and well-being.

My work schedule is a hybrid pattern, blending three days in the office with one day working from home. This flexibility has been a game-changer, allowing me to incorporate exercise into my lunch breaks and attend to family commitments, like swimming lessons and homework, without the rush.
The transition to hybrid working was a curveball, especially since I thrive on the social side of work! The initial shift to working from home felt isolating, but I've since found a balance that suits me. I enjoy the buzz of the office and the focus of work-from-home days.
As part of the Be-Well @ Work team, I help spearhead initiatives that promote financial, physical, and mental well-being among our teammates. From organising financial planning workshops to participating in sporting events like The Mary Peter’s Corporate Games, we aim to foster a supportive and engaging workplace culture. Our work extends into the community through fundraising activities, which have been both rewarding and uplifting.
Looking ahead, we have a comedy night lined up in April and participation in the Mary Peter’s Corporate Games in May. We're also gearing up for the Belfast City Marathon, something our team has taken part in several times over the years and always massively enjoyed the challenge and the fun of the day.?
Outside of work, my life revolves around family, outdoor adventures, and cultural pursuits. Whether it's exploring the Mournes, engaging in sea swimming and yoga, or going to a gig, these moments are precious. Travelling remains a passion too, with recent trips to Australia and Croatia being particularly memorable.
In every aspect of my life—from my career to my home life - I try to find a sense of balance and ensure a calm environment where we share the work involved in achieving our goals. ABL gives me that in my 9 to 5, but it’s fair to say we’re still working on that with my husband and three daughters!?
