Fueling Individual and Team Performance through Empowerment
(c) Patrick Flesner, 2024
In a recent edition of this "Leadership Shots" newsletter, I explored the transformative power of cultivating a culture of accountability within teams. This culture encourages team members not only to take ownership of their tasks but also to assume responsibility for the outcomes they achieve. The result? An environment characterized by heightened commitment, engagement, motivation, transparent communication, collaboration, and ultimately, improved individual and team performance. If you missed that newsletter, you can revisit it through this link.
However, accountability does not exist in a vacuum; it is linked to another crucial leadership concept: empowerment. In this edition of the "Leadership Shots" newsletter, I will delve into this concept, explore its inherent connection with accountability, and show how empowerment can significantly influence the performance of both individual team members and the entire team.?
Empowerment
We cannot hold our team members accountable for the results they achieve if we do not provide them with the tools and resources they need to succeed. This is why empowerment in leadership includes providing team members with all they need to perform tasks and achieve results. However, empowerment means more than just providing tools and resources. It involves providing individuals with the autonomy and confidence to make choices, take ownership, and make important decisions themselves. It includes encouraging them to contribute actively to the success of our teams and organization by being self-driven, taking risks, and fostering innovation, all while knowing they have the unwavering support of their leader.
Some leaders I coach may initially hesitate to fully empower their team members, often due to the fear of losing control. However, as I’ve highlighted in my TEDx talk: "Empowerment is not about losing control; it's about motivating and giving control to those who are best equipped to handle it—our strong teams."
Once you've established a robust team and nurtured a culture of accountability, you can confidently embrace empowering your team members. The impact is profound:
The Impact of Empowerment on Individual Performance
Motivation and Engagement: Empowered team members are more motivated because they have a sense of ownership and control over their work, leading to higher levels of engagement.
Job Satisfaction: Empowered team members find fulfilment in their roles, knowing that their contributions matter and make a difference.
Creativity and Innovation: Empowered team members feel free to express their ideas and suggestions without fear of criticism, igniting creativity and innovative thinking.
Job Performance: Empowered team members perform better because they have the freedom to make decisions aligned with their expertise and knowledge. This autonomy allows them to excel in their roles.
The Impact of Empowerment on Team Performance
Teamwork and Collaboration: Empowerment fosters a culture of collaboration, with team members more likely to share ideas, support each other, and work together to achieve common goals, thereby strengthening team cohesion and synergy.
Adaptability to Change: Empowered teams are more adaptable to change. They are accustomed to taking initiative and making decisions, which helps them adjust to new circumstances and challenges more readily.
Employee Retention: Empowered employees are more likely to stay with an organization because they feel valued and have a sense of ownership over their roles, leading to lower turnover rates and saving the organization time and resources.
Positive Organizational Culture: Leadership empowerment contributes to a positive organizational culture characterized by trust, open communication, and a shared sense of purpose. This culture attracts top talent and fosters a more productive and harmonious workplace.
Empowerment Is a Powerful Leadership Tool
Empowerment in leadership is a powerful catalyst for enhancing individual and team performance and carries the added benefit of freeing up leaders' valuable time. When team members are empowered and confident in their decision-making abilities, they require less constant approval and guidance. This shift allows leaders to focus on tasks that truly need leadership attention.

Ask Yourself
Over the weekend, why not ponder if and how you empower your team members? Have you consciously tried it? What was the impact? Or do you shy away from empowering your team members because you fear losing control? If so, you may not have built a strong team yet. Because if you have a strong team in place and created a culture of accountability, you can embrace empowering your team members.
