Meeting Regulatory Standards
Seneca Resources recently installed a new compressor engine at its Clermont Compressor Station, located in the company's Western Development Area. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection requires new equipment to be tested to ensure that emissions do not exceed the permitted level.
A third-party company conducts the testing by attaching an analyzer to the exhaust and continuously monitoring emissions for one hour. The test is done three times to determine the engine's average emissions. In addition to the initial testing, dependent on the size of the permitted engine, annual testing is completed to ensure that emissions are being maintained within the DEP-permitted limits. Seneca Resources also performs its own emissions checks on the equipment three times a year.
Cultivating a Culture of Safety
Seneca Resources, Highland Field Services, and NFG Midstream value their culture of Safety, which cannot be achieved without the commitment of each and every one of our employees and contractors.
Management Audit Program
One way Seneca Resources works to monitor and improve safety in its operations is with its annual Management Audit Program (MAP).?As part of the MAP, a multidisciplinary team of 3-4 individuals performs a field inspection each quarter at?one aspect of Seneca's operations. Each team is given a detailed checklist to ensure all aspects of the activity are reviewed. Team members are asked to document their findings in Seneca's safety database, including areas for improvement, photos, etc. Following?the audit, each team is required to write an article about their inspections for?Seneca's monthly Environmental, Health, and Safety Report.
Regular Safety Training
National Fuel Gas Company, the parent company of Seneca Resources and NFG Midstream, recently held a company-wide safety webinar to highlight best safety practices in the workplace and the field. NFG executives also stressed the important role every employee has in creating a strong safety culture. David Bauer, President & CEO of National Fuel Gas Company, described a strong safety culture as “One in which every employee sees the value of a safe work environment, takes responsibility for safety, and integrates it into their job each day.” Other topics discussed included the use of "Stop Work Authority" and identifying potential safety hazards on job sites?before?work begins.?In addition, a pigging incident that occurred at another pipeline company and a few "line of fire" incidents that happened at National Fuel was also reviewed.?The importance of identifying and sharing lessons learned from near misses and incidents was emphasized and serves as a good reminder for everyone to report all incidents so we can learn from past mistakes and prevent future incidents from occurring.
"There is no task that we do that is so urgent we cannot take the time to do it safely," said Bauer as he stressed the importance of leading by example. "If you see something, say something."
Safety is a core value of National Fuel Gas Company and all of its segments, including Seneca Resources and NFG Midstream.
