The FU Policy

Last week I participated on my brother’s Up In Your Business Podcast with the guest being Scott Jordan of Scottevest & Shark Tank fame.
Scott gave some advice that I can’t say that I’ve ever heard phrased in such a perfect way. He said a lot of things actually, but this one thing specifically:
Never forget the FU policy
With that in mind, I just sent out the following email to 32 recruiters who have not followed up with me in almost a month.

Howdy —
I’d hate to think you were a person who forgot what the FU policy was. Awesome people FU. And you are AWESOME, right?
FU means Follow Up?—?so that’s what I’m doing.
Remember the “Killer Silicon Valley instincts paired with Midwestern-nice” guy? Well that’s me, and I have not heard back from you.
That makes me sad.
But you can fix it.
Tell me you have an amazing executive marketing role open and ready to fill?—?that would make up for not hearing back from you in such a long, long time.
So stop what you’re doing, and practice the FU policy.
Be an AWESOME person and have a great weekend!

The single most reason why people do not get a response is simply because they don’t follow up.
Well, maybe it was too edgy… But I’m also trying to get a new job here and have to figure out what gets people to pay attention and take action.
Either way, it seemed to have worked as I now have several recruiters following up and scheduling calls.
What do you think, did I go too far?
EDIT: There was a quote removed, source was being sarcastic. My appologies

9 年I think it was too edgy. When Scott said, "I would never do that!" I think he meant, "You are crazy." And when he said, "I love it!", it was probably because everyone is a little scared of crazy people, and he was worried he might trigger you. :-) But it doesn't matter what I think or Scott thinks: you got results. Things immediately changed. There is movement where previously there was zero inertia. Hopefully that pays off! Good luck.

9 年It's further than I would have gone, but as a candidate pissing off recruiters is a pretty low risk. ;)
