FSSAI Launches Nationwide Surveillance Drive to Tackle Adulteration of Cassia in Cinnamon
The Central Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a directive to the Commissioners of Food Safety of States/UTs and the Central Licensing Authorities to conduct a market surveillance drive. The aim is to investigate alleged malpractices involving the adulteration of Cassia (Taj) in Cinnamon (Dalchini), both in whole and powdered forms. The concerns are related to misbranding by Food Business Operators, seeking to capitalize on the higher profit margin offered by Cassia compared to Cinnamon.
To distinguish between Cinnamomum zeylanicum (Ceylon Cinnamon, True Cinnamon) and Cinnamomum cassia, the FSSAI recommends using Coumarin content as a criterion. Cassia is known to contain high levels of coumarin, a substance that, in high doses, can have toxic effects on the liver, kidneys, and lungs. The carcinogenicity of coumarin has raised concerns, and its presence in Cinnamomum plants is natural.
The memo underscores the visual similarity of both species and the importance of thorough testing to ensure food safety. The use of modern technology and sophisticated testing equipment is crucial in this context. The focus is on controlling the quality and safety of food products from semi-manufactured to final stages. Mitra S.K.(MSK) Laboratories is highlighted as an entity committed to meeting customer and regulatory requirements, offering testing and certification services in the food industry. MSK's Food Testing facility in India is described as an integrated facility with modern technology and compliance with ISO 9001:2015, NABL (ISO/IEC 17025:2017), and recognition by FSSAI.
MSK emphasizes its commitment to providing solutions for food safety and hygiene control in response to the evolving challenges faced by the food industry. Their services aim to ensure quality and safety throughout the food production process, aligning with regulatory standards.
