The Frustrating Player Ali's Words

The Frustrating Player Ali's Words

Yesterday we had a long telephonic conversation with one of our most talented players and his father. The conversation was more of an ultimatum that if he doesn't change his attitude, he won’t be able to play professional football with us.?

Such discussions where you are supposed to point out the weaknesses or the negative qualities of a player are always very difficult. Every player loves praise but not everyone can take criticism constructively. And when there are parents involved, like in the case of this player, it is tougher, for no parent likes hearing bad things about their kids. It is therefore important to be sensitive to the feelings of those you are communicating with.

However, it is equally important to be clear and assertive about your expectations with regard to the player’s performance and attitude. Unfortunately, we are coming across an increasing number of players who lack a professional attitude. This young player has all the talent and skill-set that is required on the pitch. Any club would sign him in a heartbeat when they watch him in action. But, he is a nightmare to deal with off the pitch. His approach and attitude are very unprofessional. We told him that if he wants to play professional football, he has got to change his lifestyle, learn to obey the coach, and follow the rules of the club.?

Many of the players who come to us think that talent is all that is required to play for our club. But they’ve got it all wrong. Remember, when we sign a contract with you, it means we employ you and pay you to play for us. Therefore, we have every right to judge you on your attitude and instruct you to have a routine that is in line with our policies and expectations. Obviously, when we’re paying you a hefty amount to play, we don’t want a player who is undisciplined about his sleeping habits, does not pay heed to the coach’s guidance, and does not take the rules and regulations of the club seriously.?

Nothing is more frustrating for a coach to see an exceptionally talented player not able to utilize his full potential because of a lack of professionalism. Remember, your on-the-pitch performance may be great at the moment, but you need to be disciplined to be consistent and eager to learn from your coach if you are to survive in the long term. You should also be keen to observe and emulate the lifestyle and qualities of the players who have managed to last long. Otherwise, you won’t go very far. And when you can see that a player has what it takes to make it big yet fails to do so, it is extremely frustrating for everyone involved - the player, his parents as well as the coach.
