Frustrated leaders can create incredible opportunities....

In working with many leaders across the globe these days I hear a very common theme...."I can't relate to the new generation of employees!" and "I don't know how to motivate them, I don't know what makes them tick!!"

I've discovered some interesting facts about this frustration:

  • It's not industry specific
  • Many leaders feel this way
  • There are solutions to this complex problem

Let's start with this, bridging the gap between generations has been happening for decades and isn't a new phenomenon, the latest challenge faced by leaders today are understanding the key value differences that drive the behaviours of people in your company. No, they are not aligned and no, they do not have to be. People across the organization are driven by different value sets, accept it.

Create adoptive metrics that allow for the differences in what employees value. For example, if you know that the younger employees value more time off and travel use incentive programs that allow for more time off and more travel, while having a flexible plan for those in the same generation that are more motivated by results and financial success.

Create a shift from being a results driven organization to a purpose driven organization! Extraordinary outcomes will be created in the company....A shift in looking at the values of our peopl is what is required.
