Frustrated Job Seekers Guide To Turning Around Your Job Search

Frustrated Job Seekers Guide To Turning Around Your Job Search

Are you unhappy with how long your job search is taking?

It's not just the bad luck ... you aren't making employers see what you bring to their organizations.

But you can change the direction and speed of your job search by doing things differently. Or you can continue to do the same things, hoping for different results (didn't Einstein call that the definition of insanity?).

You're probably searching for a job the way most people do ... it's the way you've been taught by outplacement, most career coaches/authors, and the way the people you've paid to write your resume have been taught. Most job searches are based on random applications, volume, and hoping you'll get lucky.

Sometimes that works in strong job markets, but it usually fails miserably - it's causing your unhappiness.

You can do better than this, and turn your job search around. Anyone can do this, no matter your career, even if you were just ok (or even bad) at your last job, even if you were fired.

Here are a few ways to start:

  1. Show You're Better Than Just Qualified:?From employers' points of view, qualified candidates are a dime-a-dozen - Due to The Great Resignation, everyone seems to be job searching, so they expect 5-10 qualified candidates to compete for each interview spot. You need to show you're better than just qualified to get interviews, and definitely to get the job.
  2. Create A First Impression That You're The Top Candidate:?Most resumes create the first impression of being average. Even if you are an average performer, when you understand a hiring manager's needs better than your competitors, you can show an employer that you have exactly what they need.
  3. Show Employers You'll Do More Than Your Competitors:?Give employers the perception that you'll do more than others ... by doing more than others in your job search process. Most job seekers think doing more means sending more resumes (How does that show an employer you'll do more of the things that matter to that individual employer?). You're smarter than that - You'll show you can do more by gaining better information, heavily customizing your resume, and doing more than applying online.

These are a few examples, but I teach many ways that job seekers can be more effective in standing out to employers and turning around their job searches.

I help people solve the most difficult job search problems, including getting past ATSs, ageism, remote positions, product/job function/career/industry/ geographic change, job search acceleration, unemployment, "bouncy" recent career path, job search turnaround, seeking raise/promotion, industry in decline/consolidation, long term gaps, family leave, or other of the most challenging job search issues.
