Thought of the Month:?Pivoting to Sustainability?

No alt text provided for this image

It would have been simple if humanity had started from Day One with sustainability and ethics as normal behavior. But it didn’t.

We have some Millenia of dysfunctional Social behaviour (with gender issues, xenophobia, racism, genocides, etc), some centuries of bad Governance (tyranny, dictatorship, corruption, extreme competition practices etc) and some decades of Environmental disasters. A historical list of ESG troubleshooting that we keep inheriting one generation from the other without customer service

Human nature, may argue some. Or maybe just a huge misunderstanding...

It is funny how humanity lives between two axioms: that we have enough and that we don’t have enough… at the same time. At a group level, we act like we have enough space, time, resources - and we can just be?careless.?At an individual level, we act like we never have enough money, prestige, success, notoriety, power -?and we can just act?greedy.

Maybe we got it wrong all along?

We need to understand that by keeping the same variables in place (production, consumption, energy sources, mindset) we are going bankrupt (and even extinct); at the same time we need to understand that by altering just one variable, the?mindset,?we can thrive individually and as a group.

Pivoting to Sustainability.?The biggest mindset shifts of all. As Individuals, as Groups, as Companies, As Countries, as Regions, As Planet.

Is it even doable? Well… answering with NO is not an option anymore.

-?Where do we start??The scariest phrase when it comes to “pivoting to sustainability”

-?EVERYWHERE!?The most reassuring answer possible.

In your own activity, in schools, in start-ups, SMEs or corporations, in policymaking and Government strategies, in meetups and ad-hoc meetings, in hospitals, in parks, in forests, in vegetable gardens, in sports, in music, in literature, in agriculture, in fashion, in art, when washing your teeth, when taking a shower, when ordering online, when switching off or on the light. When breathing.

Come on, pivot to sustainability. Even if it is not even clear what pivot and sustainability mean precisely??It is just common sense.

The Sustainable (ish) Living Guide, by Jen Gale?

Have you ever?thought that a sustainable lifestyle is difficult to grasp? That, maybe, you have to implement big and unrealistic changes to have an impact? The good news is we can fit "sustainable living" into the life we live. We know by now that changing habits is hard work, but we can do it by creating a new normal, one that will clearly influence the way we live and our planet.

This book is for those who are worried about the state of the planet but don`t know where to start. We all have been there, feeling overwhelmed and exhausted with so many sources of information that are sent our way. "Creating change needs action", so this is a guidebook or, even better, a workbook for you to start creating a better world now.

The author, Jen Gale, found her voice through blogging every day for a year and she encourages us to find our own voice. It`s a question of motivation and persistence by going one step at a time. Big goals can be frustrating, small steps are easy to implement. as she said: "aim for progress, not perfection". Another relevant piece of advice is to find your tribe, you don't have to do it by yourself.

Terms like carbon footprint, greenhouse gas emissions, greenwashing are clearly explained from the very beginning to help you navigate this journey at your own pace. The 12 (ish) chapters are covering conscious consumption with the less is more principle, zero waste, food, fashion, travel and transport in detail with a lot of easy tips to follow.
