What are FRS radios? It is a private, short-range voice facilitating communication for family or group activities. These radios have a low power of 500 milliwatts or half a watt. These radios have a fixed radio antenna that cannot be detached. These radios can be used, and the FCC requires no license.?
FRS radios have a total of 22 channels that operate. The FRS channels?are 1 to 7. Channels 15 to 22 were for GMRS operation, and Channels 15 to 22 were GRMS radio channels. The frequency range in the UHF band is from 462 MHz to 467 MHz. Some of the FRS radio channels are shared with GMRS Channels. FRS radios are for very short range radio communications or as a toy radio for children to play with.
For ten years, you must buy a GMRS radio license online for about $35 with up to 5 watts.. With a removable radio antenna, you can purchase a GMRS radio handheld with up to 5 watts of power. Be aware of manufacturers stating on the fixed FRS radios, with only half a watt of energy and no removal antennas, on their packaging stating radios can transmit up to five miles or more; these radios have been tested by preppers and found such sales claims are false. The usual ideal conditions for radios to transmit is about 1 mile per watt or less, depending on the terrain, obstructions, and weather conditions. Mobile GMRS radios have anywhere from 5 watts to 15 watts, 20 watts, 40 watts, and 50 watts, adding coaxial and a mobile or base station antenna.

Channels 1 to 7 handhelds can operate up to 5 watts. Channels 10 to 14 can operate up to half a watt of power. For channels 15 to 22, a licensed person can operate an FRS radio of up to 50 watts. If you plan to buy a GMRS radio handheld, mobile, or base, get your license first to operate legally. The whole family can use the GRMS radio license. In rural America, three or four houses are on the same property. There are some repeater stations in large cities, or you can create your repeater station to extend the radio range of mobiles, handhelds, and mobiles that can be turned into base stations. The GMRS can be an excellent addition to having a CB radio network.
