Frozen Food Feeds the World
Most people don’t think about how fresh food is frozen and preserved, even though we’d have a hard time feeding the world without it!
The world produces more than enough food for everyone, but still more than 800 million people are chronically hungry.? At Lineage, we believe that frozen food can help solve this problem. It offers affordable nutrition, is easy to prepare and can reach people who live far from where food is grown or raised.
March is Frozen Food Month—the perfect time to recognize the important work of everyone in our industry. At Lineage , we are committed to improving the food supply chain, ultimately leading to greater accessibility of safe and reliable food around the globe.
Infusing Innovation into the Cold Chain
Maximizing the shelf life of food through freezing is crucial. It ensures proteins and vital nutrients are preserved, extending the freshness of specialty items like turkeys and pies for peak holiday seasons.
Freezing not only enhances the global accessibility of nutrient-rich foods, but also plays a crucial role in food safety by halting the growth of potentially harmful microorganisms.
And it’s not just about freezing the food—it’s about getting it to consumers around the globe. That’s where Lineage comes in and where we strive every day to live out our purpose as a company—to transform the food supply chain to eliminate waste and help feed the world.
In pursuit of that, last year, we marked a significant milestone with our 50th patent , introducing a groundbreaking blast-freezing design that optimally preserves meat and fresh produce. Other innovations, like improved temperature monitoring systems, advancements in safety testing, and better traceability, have further potential to improve the safety and quality of frozen food for consumers.
We also know that while essential, the cold chain is energy intensive. That is why Lineage is a proud member of the “Join the Move to -15 C” coalition , which is working on a potential new frozen food standard to help reduce the environmental impact of the global food supply chain.
The international freezing temperature standard of -18 C hasn’t changed for nearly a century. But research shows that raising the standard storage temperature of most frozen food by just 3 degrees Celsius to -15 C could eliminate the equivalent emissions of 3.8 million cars per year. This means potential significant energy savings and lower supply chain costs without compromising food safety or quality!?

Greater Accessibility
We don’t rest our laurels on innovation alone. Having access to safe and reliable food is essential to every single human life and we are committed to making an impact through the Lineage Foundation for Good . Since 2020, the Foundation has donated the equivalent of 172+ million meals, through our “Share a Meal” Campaign and in partnership with customers donating surplus product, team members donating food to local food banks and grants issued to help build capacity at food banks around the globe.

The U.S. Congress is also taking an interest. Last year, Senators Mike Braun (R-IN) and John Fetterman (D-PA) and Congressmen Randy Feenstra (R-IA), Tracey Mann (R-KS), Jim Costa (D-CA) and Salud Carbajal (D-CA) introduced the Fortifying Refrigeration Infrastructure and Developing Global Exports (FRIDGE) Act as part of the Farm Bill, which we believe would help strengthen the global food supply chain for frozen and refrigerated products, emphasizing the importance of what our team members do on a daily basis.

Feeding the World Together
Part of my role as Lineage’s COO is to support our 26,000+ Team Members across the globe. This allows me to meet, learn from and appreciate each and every one of our One Lineage family who serve as an essential worker in the accessibility of safe and reliable food. I am in awe of them and so proud of the work this team does every day to make the global food supply chain possible. Their tireless efforts in infusing innovation into the cold chain , maximizing food safety and enhancing accessibility to frozen food wouldn’t be possible without their unwavering commitment to our values of trust and respect.
This Frozen Food Month, let's remember how frozen food can help feed the world and the incredibly important role our Team Members play in that every single day!
