Innovating to Zero Carbon: A Revolution in Sustainable Housing

  • Achieving "net zero" emissions on a global scale by 2050 as an urgent measure to combat climate change. In light of the pressing nature of this undertaking, scholars are exploring novel methodologies to mitigate carbon emissions while preserving economic stability.
  • Zero-emission homes typically cost 1-8 percent more than traditional homes without solar or energy-efficient appliances. The Rocky Mountain Institute estimates that zero-cost homes cost 1-8% more than standard homes.
  • In 2021, the UK introduced a new building code to cut carbon emissions by 27%. A 6.6 billion pound investment program aims to enhance energy efficiency by funding low-income households to install solar panels, insulation, heat pumps, and other decarbonization measures.
  • In Australia, Zero Carbon Housing aims to eliminate carbon emissions from new homes. Renewable energy sources like solar panels and battery storage are combined with energy-efficient design. The National Energy Efficiency Building Project (NEEBP) in Australia funds zero-carbon housing.
  • The US has no zero-carbon housing policy. Advanced housing energy technologies are funded by the Department of Energy. Many states have renewable portfolio standards that require a certain percentage of renewable energy.
  • Japanese policies like the Energy Conservation Act and the Act on Promotion of Renewable Energy aim to achieve this. By 2050, Japan wants to cut building greenhouse gas emissions by 80% from 2013.
