Deep dive ?? : Why Frontline Workers Need Better Learning Tech
Despite the recent advances that have been made in the field of workplace technology, the frontline remains underserved. In fact, one third of all frontline workers say they do not have the right tools to do their job effectively.
The frontline workforce are often provided with tools that were designed for the desk-based employee, and aren't adapted to the specific needs of this time-poor, always-on-the-go demographic.
The prevalence of inadequate tech is especially apparent in frontline training. Let's take a look at how the industry is currently onboarding and upskilling its workforce, and why embeddable learning tech is the better solution.
Frontline industries are still heavily reliant on outdated training methods which fail to engage and inform their workers:
Training manuals
No matter how well-designed, training manuals are not accessible enough for deskless work. Requiring learners to sift through pages of text just to find simple answers goes against everything learning theory tells us - it increases cognitive load, and is unlikely to promote knowledge retention.
In-person training sessions
Despite being impossible to standardize, expensive to set up and not allowing learner to revisit key materials, in-person training is still used by 61% of deskless companies. Yet, 1 in 5 workers say they no longer want this kind of training, and research shows that learners retain only 8-10% of knowledge from in-person sessions.
eLearning
Much like other workplace tools, traditional Learning Management Systems (LMS) were designed with the office-based worker in mind. They're optimized for desktop, not mobile, and 4 in 10 companies say their employees lack sufficient time to learn using their LMS.

Mobile learning
Then we arrive at mobile learning - surely the most accessible solution for workers on the go? Unfortunately, not quite. Though the transition towards mobile training has revolutionized companies' ability to engage and upskill their employees remotely, many solutions still require users to log in.
Even if learning content is available on a user's mobile device, an additional login step or app to download is a significant barrier to entering and completing training courses.
Removing access barriers is critical, especially on the frontline where workers have very little time and need immediate access to information while out on the field.
So, how can we combat digital friction and optimize training delivery for the frontline?
By embedding content directly into the tools that your workers are using.
