Boston Dynamics Debuts New All-Electric Humanoid Robot

Boston Dynamics has unveiled a new all-electric version of its Atlas robot, transitioning from the previous hydraulic models.

This latest iteration of Atlas introduces 360-degree joints that support a wider range of movements, enhancing its capabilities as the "world's most dynamic humanoid robot."

Designed for increased dexterity and agility, the robot can now perform complex maneuvers like cartwheels and backflips more fluidly.

With a sleeker, consumer-friendly design, the electric Atlas also features a prominent status light, similar to those on the Spot robot line.

Scheduled for pilot testing at Hyundai facilities next year, this shift marks a strategic step towards potential commercial applications, reflecting Boston Dynamics' commitment to advancing humanoid robotics.

Humane AI Pin Reviews

theverge

The Humane AI Pin, a new wearable AI device, has received mixed reviews.

Marketed as a way to integrate AI capabilities seamlessly into daily life, the device has been praised for its innovative approach but criticized for its practical limitations.

Review highlights include its ability to identify objects and provide AI-driven responses, though it often suffers from inaccuracies and response delays due to off-device processing.

Impressive features like gesture navigation and laser projection are tempered by usability issues such as poor visibility in sunlight and overheating.

Users have found the setup process straightforward but have questioned the device’s high price ($699) and the necessity of an additional subscription fee, given its current capabilities.

Future improvements could potentially enhance its viability.

OpenAI to Open New Office in Tokyo as Part of Global Expansion Strategy

Dalle

OpenAI is expanding its global presence by opening its first office in Tokyo, Japan, joining its other international locations in London and Dublin.

The Tokyo office will offer tailored corporate services, including customer support, and collaborate on AI governance with the Japanese government.

This expansion aims to enhance OpenAI's Japanese-language services and respond to the growing demand for AI technologies in Japan.

The new office marks a significant step in OpenAI's global expansion strategy.

Microsoft Launches VASA-1: AI for Lifelike Talking Faces

Microsoft Research has unveiled VASA-1, an AI-driven technology capable of generating lifelike talking faces in real-time, designed to enhance digital content across multiple fields like content creation and game development.

VASA-1 can generate expressive and emotionally rich audio in 30 languages, including advanced features such as the Multilingual v2 and Emotional v2 models for nuanced voice production.

Despite concerns over potential misuse, Microsoft has incorporated strict measures, such as voice cloning verification, to maintain ethical usage.

Post-It Inventor Sues MLB, StubHub for Ticketing Patent “… he invented the Post-It note filed a federal lawsuit seeking $720 million from Major League Baseball, its teams, Ticketmaster LLC, and StubHub Holdings Inc., whose digital ticketing platforms allegedly infringe his patent for dynamic barcode technology. The league and ticket exchanges exploit Alan Amron’s “revolutionary” U.S. Patent No. 9,047,715, which prevents unauthorized screenshots of digital tickets, according to a complaint docketed Thursday in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York. Amron also seeks an ongoing royalty of 2% of the $4.5 billion in annual total digital ticket sales, amounting to $90 Million a year in royalties.

OpenAI's Tokyo expansion is likely all about the safety of their national policy to guard against any source training liability. That national policy will likely mean many of the AI companies will begin to base their operations there. North America's ambiguity on source copyright is just a big future litigation risk, which makes setting up AI shops here untenable.
