Front Pages from All America 7/25

Every day, I comb through the front pages of all the daily papers in America (provided via?The Freedom Forum) and will highlight 5-10 front page items that have national significance, with my quick commentary

The Daily Tribune (Wisconsin)

THE FRONT PAGE STORY: State Budget Fails to Provide Robust Mental Health Provisions

WHY IT MATTERS: The mental illness epidemic in America is undeniable.

THE TAKEAWAY: We're in the initial realization period when it comes to just how bad this crisis is. During this period, the politicians will fight over funding as if it's a partisan issue alone. Stay tuned.

Waco Tribune-Herald (Texas)

THE FRONT PAGE STORY: BU Social Work Effort in Schools Gets $2.5 Million

WHY IT MATTERS: Here's another example of another way public money is being spent to combat mental illness.

THE TAKEAWAY: If this program of introducing mental health workers into public schools is even remotely effective at addressing kids with real problems, it certainly seems smarter and a lot cheaper than having to build new mental hospitals down the road.

The Portage Daily Register (Wisconsin)

THE FRONT PAGE STORY: Honeybees' Plight Raises Alarms Among Experts

WHY IT MATTERS: The news media has been filled with honeybee apocalypse stories for two decades.

THE TAKEAWAY: Entomologists all say that the world's bee population is NOT endangered. Honey prices have been generally stable. This story continues to seem like little more than an empty scare tactic along the lines of screaming headlines about an incoming half an inch of snow in February.

Austin American Statesman (Texas)

THE FRONT PAGE STORY: Paxton Seeks to Disqualify 3 Senators from Trial

WHY IT MATTERS: We're still in the long delay period between the Texas state legislature's vote to impeach Attorney General Ken Paxton and his impeachment trial in the state senate beginning September 5.

THE TAKEAWAY: While Paxton is trying to disqualify three Democrats in the state senate, most of the state's Republicans still seem set on ousting their fellow Republican. But Paxton is refusing to resign and this trial seems sure to be very interesting.

The Tennessean (Tennessee)

THE FRONT PAGE STORY: Report: Pricing Standard Skirted by Some

WHY IT MATTERS: The Trump administration-imposed rule forcing hospitals to publish their prices so patients can assess their options is not being complied with by plenty of hospital systems across the country.

THE TAKEAWAY: A rare story critical of hospitals appears on a major newspaper's front page... so you know this is a big deal.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (Philadelphia)

THE FRONT PAGE STORY: The Pittsburgh Synagogue Shooting Trial has Taken a Heavy Emotional Toll

WHY IT MATTERS: The trial and penalty phase for the man who carried out the most deadly antisemitic attack in U.S. history is now almost completely just a local story, with the national news media refusing to update it in over 11 days.

THE TAKEAWAY: Hard questions need to be asked about why a story rife with hot-button national issues like gun violence, illegal immigration pushback, the death penalty, and more is not being covered with any regularity or urgency by the national news media. For Jews in America, this is a scary omen.
