The articles are more powerful than the updates, provided that they are real articles and not just missuses "updates"
Uses of the different publications :
Share - to share a publication from one of your followers. Write few words with it (reactions, reasons to share, comments, key points) (few words)
Comment - to start the conversation, give feedback, ask questions (To thank for interesting information, to give precisions, to react (few words)
Like - to show your interest or to thank someone
Article - to take a position on a topic and share your experiences (between 1000 and 2000 characters)
Update - If you want to something, that's the best way, add picture / media / link (few sentences)
