From Zero to One with a Mobile App

You've most probably heard the term before, but if you haven't – 'Zero to One' is a term coined in a 2014 book and is usually associated with 'creating something new and from scratch', or 'from initial idea to initial release', i.e. mostly the case for nascent startups.

A Mobile App from Scratch

Whenever you start building something from the very beginning, there are of course a certain number of best practices, however you should bear 2 things in mind:

  1. As you – to some degree – are foraying into unknown territory, you need to accept that you're going to need to explore and find out a certain amount of things.
  2. For the rest, there's general/generic advice, and case-specific advice.

As more general advice:

  • You should start off with discovery and make sure that your concept is sound, then blend into implementation and use the iterative information you're generating to feed back into your discovery.
  • Make sure to identify and mitigate your risks early on.

As for more mobile app-specific advice:

  • You need to make sure that a mobile app is the right format for your project!

Going from an initial idea to the first publicly available version of a mobile app requires a multitude of steps: starting with discovery efforts such as research and prototyping, over into alpha builds, closed and open betas all the way to invite-only and open public releases.

If you'd like to learn more about how to do so, I wrote a case study about going from zero to one with a mobile app –?you can find it here:
