From Your Fellow Copywriter: Don't be Afraid of AI

You have the power to make your worst nightmare become the sharpest sword in your arsenal.

ChatGPT has been taking the world by storm and we’ve already seen some inspiring, embarrassing, and informative stories about what people have achieved with AI software.?

However, in my network of copywriters, I’ve heard whispers of concern fester into murmurs of panic and fear.?

“This is going to replace me! I’m about to be jobless!”

Do you remember the phrase, “correlation does not imply causation”? With AI on the rise, I can confidently say that the majority of lay-offs we see within the industry are not a result of Chat GPT alone.

I always share three reasons why ChatGPT is more “R2-D2” and less “T-1000”??

  1. AI has been around way before ChatGPT
  2. This is the paintbrush, not the painter
  3. Trust in your abilities?

AI has been around before ChatGPT

While ChatGPT exploded into the scene thanks to TikTok, it’s not the first AI software to help people write.?There have been other AI softwares available to people for years– nobody seemed to be bothered by it until ChatGPT became popular.

Sure, ChatGPT came out when AI was having its ‘hot button topic’ moment as artists and other creators were using AI to create digital art and win county fair art contests, but it’s not that scary.?

If AI didn’t replace copywriters five years ago when it started to become marketable, then it won’t now that people are talking about it on TikTok.?

The Paintbrush, not the Painter

Since the dawn of time, humans have recorded their history and communicated.?

Some of the earliest historical records are in the form of cave paintings. These were done by hand or by blowing dust onto the cave walls.?Centuries later, someone invented the paintbrush, pen, and printing press.?

Those inventions didn’t destroy storytelling, they amplified it. Gave us new ways to be creative, artistic, expressive. It provides the opportunity to speak to a larger audience.?

ChatGPT — and other AI software — can be the next step in that evolution, we need to be willing to learn how to use it.?

If we bury our heads in the sand then yes, AI will replace us. If we can take advantage of living in a time when AI is in its infancy, we will guide industry evolutions for future generations.?

Trust in your abilities?

As a copywriter, we have to know our brands better than we know our favorite characters of our comfort TV shows.?

Whether we like it or not, there’s an impression that molds into our brains when we take on a new brand and begin memorizing its voice.?

No matter how big or small the brand voice is. That’s something AI still hasn’t mastered yet.?

As a copywriter, I can understand a new brand because I’m either building it from the ground up, taking time to learn a voice, or spending hours interviewing and listening to how an individual speaks to be able to write for them.?

AI is only able to use what’s in its database. Sure, you can make it sound like Russel Brunson or?David Olgivy, but it’s not going to know the voice of the ‘mom and pop’ store you’re helping get off the ground.?

Use your abilities to connect with humans and brands to your advantage. Learn what the voice is, then use AI to help amplify it. Have it generate drafts of email newsletters, blogs, or social media posts, then use your creative touch to mold those into the perfect article for your client.
