From Yorkshire to Cornwall
Hidden Gallery
Bristol - Brighton - London - Bath Extraordinary Art for the Modern Collector
This week we invite you to take stock of our new stock, from some of Britain's most iconic artists. The four artists featured below, take us on a tour of the country, from Yorkshire to Cornwall via the East End.
All four artists' work is demonstrating strong growth in demand and value, and I recommend them as very sound additions to any collection.
The North: David Hockney and L.S Lowry
Whilst Hockney's career took flight at the Royal College of Art in London, his formative years were spent 172 miles away in Bradford. It was here, in his family home, that Hockney unrelentingly filled the margins of newspapers, magazines and books with pencil drawings, before owning his first sketchbook at the age of ten.
Manchester was essential to L.S Lowry's art; his paintings are embroiled in and unmistakably of North West England's industrial districts, during the mid twentieth century. His urban representations are characterised by muddy hues, towering industrial chimneys and populated by sombre 'matchstick' figures. Viewers of the work feel Lowry's sense of place as much as they observe it.

The South: Tracey Emin and Bridget Riley
Tracey Emin was born in Croydon and raised in Kent with her twin brother. She studied fashion at Maidstone College of Art and sited this period as incredibly influential to her artwork. When interviewer Carl Freedman asked her to name a person of great significance, she responded, "It's not a person really. It was more a time, going to Maidstone College of Art, hanging around with Billy Childish, living by the River Medway."
At the outbreak of World War II, Bridget Riley, her sister, mother and aunt moved from London to a Cottage in Cornwall. A young Riley experienced great freedom whilst here, playing on the cliffs and beaches of Padstow. She spent many a day staring at the skies, observing light, colour and cloud formations morphing. She has later said that these memories have informed her visual awareness, throughout her life.
