From Work Mode to Spouse/Mom Mode: Balancing It All

Introduction

Can women truly have it all?

This is a question many successful female leaders grapple with daily. Balancing a thriving career with family responsibilities is a common challenge, and finding harmony between the two can seem daunting. Many women feel torn between their professional ambitions and roles as loving spouses and mothers. The guilt of neglecting family for work, or vice versa, can be overwhelming. I've walked in these shoes, leading several nonprofits and businesses for over 30 years while balancing a four-decade marriage and raising three children. The struggle to keep it all together as a leader and a loving family member is real, but it is possible with the right strategies.

Celebrate Your Achievements

First and foremost, take a moment to celebrate your achievements. Recognize your hard work and dedication to balancing your career and family responsibilities. Give yourself a pat on the back for your successes, big or small. Acknowledging your accomplishments and the effort it took to get there is essential. As Maya Angelou said,

"You alone are enough. You have nothing to prove to anybody."

Celebrate your resilience and strength.

Additionally, recognize the support from your loved ones. Their encouragement and help play a crucial role in your journey. Acknowledge their contributions and express your gratitude. An African proverb says, "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together."

Embrace the Power of Pause

When life feels overwhelming, embracing the power of pause is crucial. One effective strategy is to stop, take a deep breath, and remind yourself that everything will be okay. This technique helps you stay present and manage stress effectively.

Here’s how you can do it: Cose your eyes, inhale deeply through your nose, hold for a few seconds, and exhale slowly through your mouth. Repeat this a few times until you feel calmer. Incorporating positive affirmations can further enhance this practice. Examples include "I am capable and strong," "This too shall pass," and "I am in control of my reactions." As mindfulness expert Jon Kabat-Zinn says,

"You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf."

Establish Routine and Organization

Routines provide a sense of certainty and help manage daily tasks efficiently. Develop habits and systems that work for you and your family. My morning routine involves getting up at the same time every day, doing something physical like strength training or walking, and making my bed. This simple routine gives me a sense of accomplishment and sets a productive tone for the day. As Stephen Covey says, "The key is not to prioritize what's on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities."

Build Your Dream Team

Just as you build teams at work, create a support network at home. This could include hiring help for household tasks, tutoring for kids, or a personal trainer. Don't hesitate to ask your children to help with chores or enlist a relative or friend for assistance. Delegating tasks can significantly reduce stress and free up time for self-care and family activities. Building your dream team at home ensures you have the necessary support to manage both professional and personal demands. Remember, "Teamwork makes the dream work."

During my career, I hired someone to help with my younger children after school. She would help them with homework and prepare snacks. Even though I had to pick her up because she didn’t drive, having her there with my children for a few hours made a big difference in me feeling less stressed!

Communicate Effectively

Communication is a foundational skill in both leadership and family life. Regularly check in with your loved ones, practice active listening, and create a space where everyone feels heard and valued. Good communication fosters a supportive home environment that everyone looks forward to coming home to. Effective communication can strengthen relationships and improve overall family dynamics. Oprah Winfrey puts it, "Great communication begins with connection." Connecting means truly listening to your loved ones' feelings, ambitions, and challenges and responding with empathy and understanding.

Prioritize Physical Development

Invest in your physical well-being through regular exercise. Whether it's strength training, cardio, or dancing, find activities you enjoy and make them a habit. Taking care of your body reduces stress and boosts your energy and overall well-being. Prioritizing physical health is crucial for maintaining the stamina needed to balance leadership and family roles.

"Take care of your body. It's the only place you have to live," said Jim Rohn.

I started working out early in the mornings to have time for myself before the day’s demands began. It became a habit, and now I can't start my day without moving my body with exercise. This investment in physical health has paid off, reducing stress and increasing my energy levels in this life stage.

Embrace Authenticity

Being your authentic self is essential for both personal fulfillment and professional success. Understand and embrace who you are, pursue your passions, and live a life that reflects your true self. Authenticity enhances your relationships and leadership capabilities, allowing you to connect more deeply with others and lead more effectively. Brené Brown states, "Authenticity is the daily practice of letting go of who we think we're supposed to be and embracing who we are."

Conclusion

Balancing leadership and family life is a continuous journey that requires intentional effort and strategies. You can successfully navigate the demands of both worlds by celebrating your achievements, pausing to breathe, staying organized, building a support network, communicating effectively, prioritizing physical health, and embracing authenticity.
