From Woman to Mother: The Defining Moment of Becoming a Working Mom

Getting pregnant while having a full-time job can be scary for women. The thought of balancing a growing family while still trying to climb the corporate ladder can be overwhelming. But, with help and tools, it's possible to have a great career and a happy family.

When I found out I was pregnant, I was thrilled, but also anxious about how it would affect my career. Thankfully, I had supportive male managers who encouraged me to continue growing professionally despite the pregnancy. We worked together to plan my maternity leave, and once I returned, they helped me navigate my new reality with flexibility so I could balance my child's care and productivity.

Finding balance is not easy, there were days when I felt like I was failing in both areas but with time I learned to manage my time better and prioritize what was important.

As a working mom, I'm always on the lookout for products and tips that can make my life easier. And I realized that I wasn't alone in this struggle, and many women face similar challenges. That's why I started a blog called "From Me to Mom" to share my discoveries and help other moms elevate their motherhood experience.

The Best-Kept Secret of Successful Working Moms: Outsourcing Tasks

Time is a precious commodity that often feels in short supply. Being a working mom is a challenging balancing act that can often leave you feeling stressed and stretched thin. But many successful working moms have a common secret: outsourcing tasks. This means delegating responsibilities to others, whether it's hiring professionals or asking friends or family for help. It may sound like a luxury but it can actually be a practical solution that helps you achieve a better work-life balance, reducing stress and freeing up time for self-care.

Tasks that working parents can outsource include cleaning, meal delivery, and childcare. Remember, it is not a sign of weakness but a strategic decision to prioritize what's important to you and your family.

The Undervalued Role of Daycare Workers in Supporting Working Mothers

Finding reliable childcare was essential to maintaining my career and keeping my household running smoothly. And I am fortunate enough to have found a daycare that not only provides exceptional care for my children but also serves as an invaluable support system for me and my family. The caregivers and teachers at our daycare have become like family to us. They greet us every morning with smiles and hugs, making drop-off a little less stressful.

Caregivers and teachers at daycares play a crucial role in nurturing, educating, and caring for our children while we're at work, and for that, we can't thank them enough. Yet, despite their crucial role in our lives, daycare workers are often undervalued and underappreciated. These dedicated professionals shape the minds and hearts of our children, and their contributions to our families and communities should be recognized and celebrated.

Unfortunately, too many families struggle to find accessible and affordable childcare, leaving many mothers unable to pursue their careers or forced to work part-time or in lower-paying jobs. The cost of childcare also contributes to the gender wage gap, as women are more likely to take time off or work part-time to care for their children.

As working mothers, we should recognize and celebrate the contributions of daycare workers who play a crucial role in caring for and educating our children while we're at work. These dedicated professionals provide invaluable support to working mothers, yet they are often undervalued and underappreciated. At the same time, we should advocate for policies that support affordable and accessible childcare to help create a more equitable and supportive society for all families. By recognizing and advocating for the contributions of daycare workers and accessible childcare policies, we can create a society that better supports and values the role of working mothers and families.

Minouche Shafik
"In the past jobs were about muscles, now they're about brains, but in future they'll be about the heart"

Economist Minouche Shafik believes that the future of work will be transformed by #empathy and #emotionalintelligence, and those who can harness the power of their hearts will thrive. She stresses the importance of early childhood education as a means to promote economic growth, reduce inequality, and improve social outcomes. According to Shafik, experiences and interactions in the first few years of a child's life can have a lasting impact on their cognitive, social, and emotional development. She advocates for investing in high-quality care and education for children from birth to three years old, as well as the training and professional development of early childhood educators. Shafik's message is clear: we must recognize the importance of emotional intelligence and support those who contribute to the development of future generations. Improving Employee Experience: Supporting Working Mothers in the Workplace

Working mothers face numerous challenges when it comes to balancing their work and family responsibilities. To support them, employers must provide greater support, including policies like paid parental leave and flexible work arrangements.

Paid parental leave is crucial for new parents, allowing them to take time off to bond with their child without worrying about lost income. Flexible work arrangements, such as telecommuting and flexible schedules, can help working mothers balance their responsibilities at work and home. Employers who invest in family-friendly policies not only benefit their employees but also their bottom line through higher retention rates, lower turnover costs, and greater productivity.

It's time for employers to recognize the value of working mothers and create a workplace culture that supports their needs and work-life balance.

Empowering Working Moms: Strategies for Overcoming Barriers and Achieving Success

I've had many conversations with mid-career women about the unique challenges that working moms face. From the constant juggling of childcare responsibilities to facing discrimination and unequal pay, there are many barriers that can make it difficult for working moms to achieve success.

However, I believe that with the right mindset and strategies, these barriers can be overcome.

  • Prioritize self-care by taking time to care for oneself physically, emotionally, and mentally. This can include exercise, meditation, or other forms of self-care that improve overall well-being and performance at work.
  • Build a support network. This could include colleagues, friends, family members, or other working moms who can offer advice, support, and encouragement, even virtually. Having a support network can help working moms feel less isolated and provide them with the resources you need to navigate challenges.
  • Set boundaries around your time and workload. This means being assertive about your needs and priorities and communicating them clearly to colleagues and supervisors. Setting boundaries is crucial for avoiding burnout and balancing professional and personal responsibilities
  • Seek out mentors and role models who have successfully navigated similar challenges can provide valuable insights and strategies for overcoming barriers and achieving goals. Networking with other working moms and pursuing professional development opportunities can help working moms gain the support they need to thrive.
