From Wine to Beef: Smarter Products
Could traceability of cattle (wearing RFID chips on their ears) to prevent disease be a money maker? Every product in a grocery store has a better benefit or it isn’t there; 20,000 new products are pitched every year to the grocery trade and the only ones that make it have clear better benefits.
There’s been a new wine launched that has an RFID chip on the bottle to measure temperature throughout shipment guaranteeing quality for greater consumer peace of mind. What they haven’t figured out is that they could also provide dinner value to the wine, embedding whimsical stories about the winery that people could scan with their smart phones. “Look their dog Butch peed on your vine.” Think of the opportunities for agriculture. Traceability for the dairy industry could lead to children scanning their milk carton and learning about Bessie the cow and the farmer who raised it. In future producers will dialogue with consumers.
With smart technologies, Better Benefit opportunity abounds. In the egg section there are now “free range” and “Omega3” eggs and other better benefit options. Now, in the beef section the consumer just sees packages with a price. So many new product opportunities!
