From Waste to Resource.

From Waste to Resource.

Tailings engineering is changing with better methods that improve safety, sustainability, and efficiency in mining waste management. One important improvement is dry stacking, which removes the risks of liquid tailings storage by drying and stacking the waste. This method is safer for the environment and more stable over time.

Mining companies are also finding ways to reuse old tailings by removing leftover minerals, turning waste into something valuable. In some cases, tailings are used in construction materials, like bricks and road surfaces, to reduce waste.

Technology is making tailings easier to monitor, with drones, satellites, and sensors helping engineers track dam stability and detect early signs of problems. Some companies are also using plants and microbes to clean harmful chemicals in tailings, helping turn waste areas into safe places for animals and plants.

As mining moves toward waste-free solutions, these new methods are making tailings storage safer and more environmentally friendly.
