I recently had an interesting chat with a CIO who shared an opinion that many people may know. "Our ERP and CRM are rock solid," they told me. We've already built the base. Why would we need smart or agent-based software on top of that?"
That's a good question, and I felt a little excited at that moment. I sensed we were about to have a more in-depth conversation, one that goes beyond "tools" and "systems" and looks at how we can improve our core technology to give people, teams, and organisations more power.
We talked about this for a long time. What if ERP and CRM could do more than just keep track of and manage data? But what if they could be moving forces that make decisions? Say they could help teams guess what people will need, solve problems right away, and make time for inspiration, growth, and new ideas?
From routine to empowering action with intelligent automation
The ERP and CRM that the CIO used were great core tools. But clever automation—this was something that could make those tools work together.
Purchase orders in ERP are changed instantly by sales data from CRM, so there is no need for an email, phone call, or spreadsheet. Real-time demand lets the purchasing team know what to do, so they can spend their time making smart decisions instead of keeping track of numbers.
That's what smart technology does. It brings the data we already have to life and makes a link between systems that works perfectly. ERP and CRM are no longer just sitting there; they're now working and helping to make choices that move the business forward.
I could tell by the CIO's nod that they could picture their team's daily work going more smoothly. That feeling of knowing your team isn't stuck on boring jobs but is instead free to take on bigger challenges is very powerful.
Agentic AI: Moving Forward and Getting Used to the Journey
After that, we moved on to agentic automation, a method that gives the system heart, or a digital sense if you will. I talked about how agentic automation is like a smart teacher—it learns from mistakes, sees trends, and steps in before problems happen.
Think about this: When supply chain data enters the ERP system, agentic automation knows that there will be a delay. Customers won't have to wait because it reroutes or alerts the right people. The system gets smarter over time, like a trusted team member who doesn't need to be told everything all the time but knows when to step in and keep things on track.
This idea changed the story for the CIO. ERP and CRM don't have to be static and lifeless. They can be active partners you can trust. Imagine a system that’s not only reacting but also proactive, helping teams stay ahead of the game so they're always ready for what comes next.
The Shift: From Transactional to Transformative Partnerships
What became clear during our chat is that ERP and CRM are not just "business tools" when intelligent and agentic processes are added on top of them. We're talking about relationships that change things. The systems don't just keep track of what people did in the past; they also shape the future of work, letting people think big, act quickly, and come up with new ideas.
I could see that the CIO's view was changing by this point. Intelligent automation isn't meant to replace ERP or CRM; it's meant to make them more flexible, connected, and quick to respond.
I told them, "Imagine if your ERP and CRM didn't just store data, but also helped you make decisions, saved you time, and made your team better." How could that make a difference?"
Why Go Beyond the Basics? The Possibilities are Endless
We all know that the world we live in now needs people who are quick, smart, and flexible more than ever. Over and above the basics means making systems that can predict, change, and grow with the business. Making a strong base into a launchpad is what it's all about.
Our talk with this CIO didn't just show him the benefits of automation; it also gave him a vision. With intelligent and agentic layers, ERP and CRM could become the heart of their company's journey, a helpful presence that knows what people need, fills in the gaps, and lets people do more of what they're good at.
So, let me leave you with this question: When we're in charge, we often see systems as tools. What if we saw them as partners instead? How might technology help your business and the people who work there?
Let’s talk about moving from transactional to transformative.
