From Titles to Triumph: Navigating Job Titles

From Titles to Triumph: Navigating Job Titles

The job market is filled with a dizzying array of titles, making it challenging for candidates to determine if a position aligns with their career goals. ?It can be very confusing since titles often differ significantly between companies, industries, and regions.? ?Here are the top 5 challenges and best practices for job candidates to effectively navigate the labyrinth of varying job titles in your job search: ?

1. Challenge: Inconsistent Job Titles Across Companies

Different companies use different titles for similar roles, making it difficult to identify equivalent positions.? An apple at one company might be a kumquat at another company.?

  • Case Study Examples: My engineering colleagues can experience headaches when they compare a senior engineer in company A to an advisory engineer in company B.? While my finance friends are left scratching their heads when they try to differentiate a senior analyst in company A from an advisory analyst in company B.? Which roles are higher?? ??
  • Best Practice: Research Industry Standards:? This is where a little research can be helpful.? Familiarize yourself with common industry titles and how they may vary between companies to better align your job search with your skills and experience. Sources include:
  • Your professional association may provide insights, like for engineers, the National Society of Professional Engineers , and see the IQS Engineering Association List.
  • The US Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Standard Occupational Classification. For example, finance professionals can look for detailed occupational descriptions for Financial Analysts and Advisors.
  • Your school…professors and career office can guide students who are entering the job market.
  • Your HR team…at your current employer, if you are currently employed, can help you differentiate titles between various teams or divisions.

2. Challenge: Ambiguity in Job Titles

Titles can be vague or misleading, sometimes not reflecting the actual responsibilities of the role. For example, a general manager might be an executive in one company, but a mid-level employee in another.

  • Best Practice: Focus on Job Descriptions, Not Titles:?? When comparing two job postings, be sure to analyze job descriptions to understand the role's responsibilities and requirements, regardless of the title.? For example, under requirements, does the employer require 3 years or 10 years minimum experience?? These can be clues to whether the role is more early career or mid-level career.

?

3.?Challenge: Overemphasis on Titles?

Candidates may focus too much on job titles instead of the role's responsibilities and growth opportunities.

?

4.? Challenge: Difficulty in Matching Skills to Titles

It can be challenging to align your skill set with the right job title, especially when titles don't clearly indicate the required skills.

  • Best Practice: Tailor Your Resume and Application: Customize your resume to highlight relevant experiences and skills that align with the job description. On LinkedIn, be sure to invest time in both updating your skills--and attributing those skills to all your experiences and education.
  • Here's a sample chart that may shed light on the career ladder for individual contributors and management. Note the similarities in names across levels. But keep my above guidance in mind...don't overemphasize titles:

5.?? Challenge: Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) and Keywords ?

Job titles often act as key filters in ATS through AI/LLM, making it essential to align resumes with the right titles and keywords to get noticed.

  • Best Practice: Use Keywords in Job Searches:? Search for jobs using relevant skills and responsibilities as keywords to uncover positions that may have different titles but are a good fit for you.
  • Best Practice: Hire Me:? A career coach can help you navigate this from several perspectives…preparing a resume that works best with both ATS, recruiters and hiring managers.??A career coach can also guide you through the process of building your resume and profile to reduce the challenges of comparing job titles between two organizations.

By following these best practices, you'll be better equipped to navigate the complexities of various job titles and increase your chances of finding a fulfilling role that aligns with your skills, interests, and career goals.
