FROM THEORY TO PRACTICE - Always Do Your Best - "Didn't I?"

In our pursuit of growth and self-improvement, few principles resonate as deeply as "always do your best." It's a deceptively simple concept that carries profound implications for how we approach life. Yet, putting it into consistent practice can be a formidable challenge.
The truth is, our "best" is a constantly evolving benchmark, shaped by innumerable factors like our physical and mental state, the circumstances we face, and the competing demands on our energy. What represented our peak effort yesterday may fall short of our fullest potential today.
To genuinely embody this agreement requires developing a habit of radical self-awareness and compassionate accountability. Here are some key practices to help you move from aspirational theory to embodied reality:
- Define "your best": Get clear on what metrics you're using to evaluate your effort. Is it sustained focus? Going above and beyond? Giving 100% of your current capacity? Define it explicitly.
- Release perfectionism: Doing your best doesn't mean doing everything perfectly every time. That's an impossible and self-destructive standard. Aim for progress over perfection.
- Tune into rhythms: Recognize that your energy levels ebb and flow based on cycles like sleep, nutrition, stress, etc. Adjust your "best" expectation accordingly.
- Be Self-Compassionate: There will be times you know you underperformed. Instead of harsh self-judgment, explore what was really going on with curiosity. Build understanding.
- Celebrate small wins: Don't wait for major achievements to acknowledge your effort. Recognize when you pushed yourself, even in small ways. Positive reinforcement matters.
To gauge your growth, reflect on these questions:
- Can you delineate what "your best" looks like based on the situations you face?
- Are you able to let go of counterproductive perfectionism?
- Do you attune to your body's natural rhythms and extend yourself grace in low energy periods?
- When you fall short of your capabilities, do you explore that with self-compassion rather than harsh criticism?
- Are you actively reinforcing the habit of doing your best through celebrating small wins?
Bringing more consciousness to this simple aim of "always doing your best" allows it to become an inspiring, motivating force - not an overwhelming or paralyzing expectation.
With self-awareness, we can be ever-evolving in our effort, constantly raising our "personal best" benchmark while extending ourselves the grace to be imperfectly human along the way. That's how personal maxims transform from theoretical concepts into foundational life practices.
Quick case study
Claude, a seasoned sales professional, found himself struggling to close deals this first quarter of the year despite his extensive experience. Frustrated and seeking solutions, he decided to work with Michele, a communication strategist specializing in revealing unseen-unheard hiccups in one's language and word choices. Through our sessions, Claude became aware of the assumptions he had been making during client interactions, which had been negatively impacting his close ratio.
With Michele's guidance, Claude began practicing an additional layer of active listening, empathy, and open-mindedness to better understand his clients' needs. As he focused on clarifying their pain points instead of assuming he knew their requirements after initial conversations, he found that clients were more receptive to his solutions.
By the end of the quarter, Claude's close ratio had increased significantly, resulting in an additional 7% in sales and $227K in additional revenue. This breakthrough allowed Claude to recognize the transformative power of challenging his assumptions that show up in language and word choices, giving him access to a new level of active listening that clients appreciated (and rewarded him for being able to do.) Offering him and the entire team a new example of continuous self-improvement in achieving success.
