From Theatre in Zimbabwe to Alkebulan: A Journey of Resilience and Determination

My journey to where I am today, spearheading the Alkebulan project, has been one of many twists, turns, and unexpected challenges. It all began in the vibrant theatre scene of Zimbabwe in the 1990s, where my passion for storytelling and performance first took root. In the early 2000s, I was honoured with multiple trophies and awards for my contributions to the theatre world when I competed in the Allied Arts competitions, the Zimbabwe Eisteddfods equivalent.

However, life's path took an unexpected turn when I moved to the UK in 2008 to pursue studies in TV and Film. Struggling with homelessness for three and a half years, I faced adversity that tested my resolve. Despite these challenges, I persevered, driven by my unwavering passion for storytelling.

Returning to Zimbabwe, I encountered yet another hurdle. Despite recording music in the UK, it was only released in 2013 after my return, as bureaucratic complications delayed its launch. This setback, coupled with the revelation that the British Border Agency had held onto my papers during my homelessness, sent me on a different trajectory. Yet, amidst adversity, I found solace and support in the kindness of others, who helped me navigate through trying times.

In 2014 I represented Zimbabwe in the Big Brother Africa house, reaching the finals. While this experience opened doors and opportunities, it also brought unwelcome scrutiny and forced me to retreat from the spotlight, instead choosing to work behind the scenes.

Life took another turn when I met my now-wife, leading me to relocate to the UK. Despite the challenges, the journey introduced me to many remarkable individuals, whose friendships and support have been invaluable.

Today, I stand at the helm of Alkebulan, a project born out of a desire to revolutionise the African entertainment industry. It represents an opportunity to deliver a more holistic approach to creativity that honours our rich cultural heritage and amplifies underrepresented voices.

My journey is a testament to resilience, determination, and the power of community. As I continue to chart new territories with Alkebulan, I am reminded of the unwavering support that has propelled me forward, I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to a brighter future for African storytelling.

In reflecting on the journeys of luminaries such as Bill Withers, Morgan Freeman, and Curt Walker, I am struck by the profound significance of every twist and turn along the path. Much like theirs, my journey has been a tapestry of challenges and triumphs, each experience serving as a vital stepping stone towards the present moment. It is here, that I recognise the culmination of these diverse encounters as preparation for a greater purpose. A purpose anchored in propelling an entire community forward.

I find inspiration to forge ahead fearlessly, embracing the unknown with courage and conviction. And just as the above-mentioned, paved the way for future generations, I am humbled to stand on the precipice of possibility, driven by a profound sense of purpose and a deep-rooted commitment to uplifting those around me.

In this pivotal moment, I recognise that the culmination of my experiences has uniquely prepared me to lead and inspire. With each twist and turn serving as a testament to resilience, determination, and unwavering faith, I embrace the opportunity to drive meaningful change within my community. Together, we embark on a journey fueled by hope, vision, and a shared commitment to shaping a brighter tomorrow for all.
